How many subwoofers do I need?
I'm going to get a 2004 WRX this month and I want to upgrade the stereo system as soon as I get the car. Please correct me if my question is too dumb or too vague
I will defintely get a subwoofer for the new car, but not sure how many I should get. I mostly listen to trance, so I definetly need some deep bass. So, I was thinking of getting two 10 inches or one 12 inch sub that has roughly 150-200 RWS each. Are two subs really neccesary, or is one 12 inch good enough? Any advantages or disadvantages? I just wanna decent stereo system I can enjoy listening to. (I'm planning to spend max $1500 for the stereo upgrade, keeping the HU stock)
I know nothing about stereos, so any kind of advice or yelling would be appreciated. Thanks.
BTW, I will get ported enclosure for the woofers.

Car Info: 2001 sub. imp.
if you listen to trance, you will probably want 2 10s in a SEALED box. they will hit way faster and will be deeper than just one 12. the more wattage they take rms, the better, as long as you have an amp that at least matches the RMS OUTPUT, not max.
editne 12 will be slower than a 10. a sealed box will be quiter than a ported box, and a bandpass will be louder than both of those. but as the boxes get louder, they lose sound quality. i also suggest making your own box, buy the subs then on the packaging there is info on dimensions of the box, make the largest one possible for the loudest sound, but remember, the louder you go, the worse the quality and the slower the subs will hit.

Thanks for the input guys, but now I'm a little confused.
I thought of getting a ported box because of the lower bass needed listening trance. I have a Altec Lasing 641 speakers for my home computer, which has a sub with 2x6.5 woofers in a ported box. I really liked the bass coming out of that thing...
How tight is bass with the sealed box? Is the bass from sealed box better to listen to with trance music? (I prefer to listen to progressive with hard and low base)

yea stick with a good ten inch. power if with a good monoblock amp and i suggest changing the speakrs since they do make a hell of a difference and the Hu also makes a bit of a difference not much tho. u probably can get all that **** for like 900 max.. depends on what brnad you buy.

I got a Boston Pro Series 10" sub and a 2 channel MTX amp running it in a sealed box. It definately sounds good though. I could put a lot more power to the sub and it would take it easily but for what I listen to it is fine. Its a very musical sub and it sounds great on rap to even the heaviest of organ notes for classical music. I would hear more of the sub its just that im running a boat load of seperates in my car. If there is a place for speakers I have them there: center channel, kick panels, A pillars, front doors, rear doors, rear deck. Its definately loud but the mids and highs drown out the single 10 at times.

I finally picked up the WRX!
Amazing car, but horrible stereo!! Even the stereo in the Echo that I rented before sounded better than this!
Looks like a good quality 10 inch sub and amp is the way to go.
Actually, my good friend just offered me his stuff, which includes two JL 10W4s in a sealed box and one PPI4400 and one PPI2300(or 2100, not sure). Since most of you are recommending sealed box, I'll give it a try. (I'm gonna have to purchase some door speakers, too)
Now my next question is:
Do I really need a good deck?? Does having a aftermark HU make a huge difference in sound compared the the stock HU?? I only want some decent sound and want to keep the "stock look".
Does anyone have the specs on the stock HU?

I am pulling out my sub and amp in a few days because I don't lust for bass anymore. Plus I miss having any trunk room with an amp rack and it takes up space for golf clubs, fishing rods and a spare tire. Anyone interested in a MTX 6152 amp and a Boston Acoustics Pro Series 10" sub together?

check out the Elemental Design 10k subwoofers. They have really good sq and their only $110. Their good in small sealed boxes.

also the adire shivas mark lll which cost $125. But you will need a big box for this though.

Car Info: Black WRX, X.S. turbo back exhaust, X.S. cold air, and a lot of plans
If you are going to use an amp and an EQ then the stock HU is fine, I am using mine, and I have 800 watt chrome Rockford amp, one boston Pro12 (2ohm) in a custom fiberglass box. And a sony amp qith a build in EQ for the mids and highs I haven't changed the rear speakers cuz I never ride back there. In the front I have some rockford, which are going to get changed out with some 6.5 bostons. If you have the money, which with $900 you could, I would say get a custom box made, no matter what sub you pick, it will sound best in a custom box.

whatever route you take, do not get a bandpass box. Bandpass is low quality and would use for alternative or rock music.
I am going to get 2 kicker solo barics L7 12 inch, pushing it with a digital directed 1100.
Change yor speakers to components with crossovers of course.
Kciker L7 is excellent or even infinity kappa perfect...
