How to improve '05 STI stereo?

My stock '05 STI stereo seems very below average. What can I do to improve it for less than $1,000, and who should do the installation in the San Francisco bay area? I'm not handy at all.
Thanks!

That's a decent budget - unless you have a good friend (and then you would not be asking us) check out some local shops and listen to demos and then shop

Yeah, definately get an Alpine Head unit. You can try changing that first. Then if your not satisfied you can try getting upgraded speakers and a sub.
