easiest way to get mp3 player going
Im buying my WRX tomorrow, and probably first project ill want to do while i am recovering the cost to buy summer wheels, is to get am MP3 player going. such as a 20gig mp3 player.
im guessing the stock unit doesnt have an input jack. anyone have some suggestions? i hate cds so dont care to deck out cash for something where the stock unit would be ok.
ill upgrage my speakers and put a bass unit in the back at some point of course. just need my 50k songs accessable.

Well my only lgical suggestion is to buy a new Head unit that plays MP3's. I hate cd's too so i bought the Kenwood MP819 for $279 at Tweeter, The best money I've spent on my stereo by far!

i looked up that kenwood head unit, not isactly what i was looking at but looked nice.
i found that the FM toy at www.myirock.com is pretty cool. lets you plug it into anything that outsources thru headphones to an fm channel.
think its still crazy to pay 500 dollars for a 20gig hard drive on those ipod. but i know a lot that have them and love them. and yes im a pc user. mac is for vw bug owners

Hey I have a JVC MP3 head unit and it also has an additional jack for plugging in anything else. Convenient feature.

You've got three options:
Keep your stock head unit and use a cassette adapter.
Buy an aftermarket head unit with an "AUX" input.
Use an FM transmitter.
The first two would be my only choices as the many people have complained about the iROCK and others like it. The fact is, it's all based on you're head unit's radio reception. If you get lousy reception that goes in/out, that's what your MP3 player will sound like.
I'm looking at an '03 RS and hoping I can find a WRX head unit to use my Odyssey 1000 (20GB, for only $350!! Plus a built in FM tuner and recorder!) with. I like the idea of keeping the factory head unit (doesn't attract theives) but still having half of my CD collection at my fingertips.
Good Luck!

Yoy actually have another option. You can purchase a new head unit that actually plays MP3s that are burned to a CD. This is the route that I took.
I have a Nomad Zen (20GB MP3 player) I used it with the stock headunit for about a month via the cassette adapter. It worked fine, but I didn't like see the wire hanging in front of me all the time. Since I was going to put in an aftermarket system anyway, I bought the headunit that also plays MP3s.

playing mp3s
well, you still only get about 160 songs on a cd in mp3 format. i myself have thousands of songs, and have them nicely organized with lots of sub catagories. not that i did any of that, more of a leecher when it comes to music. I know some people take an old laptop, put linux on it, then stick a large hard drive and away they go, which id be tempted to do, but not sure where to hide it yet. its 15 below right now, so though i have my car, i dont wanna go digging around yet! heh.
so am i right that the stock head unit does NOT have any inputs then? seems a shame. anyone have pictures of their WRX after putting in a new head unit? wondering how it would look.

The head unit I have plays MP3's burned to cd's as well as having an Aux port. It's the only way to go. As far as the # of songs per cd, it depends on what bps you record them at. @128 you can get quite a few songs on 1 cd.

Trust me, use an FM modulator, its cheap and it will give you the best signal. Buying a deck is gonna be a waste, especcially when you are trying to save money. you can get an in-line fm modulator for like 40 or 50 bucks that will interface with RCA's, convert the RCA's to a head phone jack and you got you system. the iRock is cool, but it battery powered and you have to raplace them. the MP3 decks are sweet, but some have better reading system then others, so you have to be wise about the one you purchase. the tape adapter just sux..they are alright but the sound quality compared to the FM is no comparrison. The FM modulator will have to be installed, but its gonna be worth it.

I got a crappy FM modulator that plugs into your cigarette lighter (will also power your mp3 player) but on my BMW with it's digital tuning and my crowded airwaves it absolutly sucked. More often than not it didn't have enough power to keep the broadcast in stereo. I think FM amplification is less than CD and tape as well, so I'll be buying one of them tape adapters for the WRX.
