DIY Auxiliary Input for iPod - WRX Wagon
I recently traded in my MY03 WRX Wagon for an MY05 WRX Wagon on the Subaru GTP trade-in program. The OEM stereo sounds better than the one on the 2003, but it doesn't have a cassette player in it. That left me with nowhere to plug in my iPod, so I ordered a Clarion head unit with a rear mounted AUX input. This only solved half of the problem, and introduced another problem with the extra DIN space. I then ordered an OEM Silver DIN pocket to fill in the space, and bought a wire harness to connect the head unit to the vehicle.
I then took a standard RCA to 3.5mm Male Stereo cable, and cut off the 3.5mm end. I soldered on a panel mounted 3.5mm Female jack, and mounted it onto the blank accessory space on the center console where the switch for the heated seat option goes. Now I can plug in my iPod without obstructing the shifter and HVAC controls, and it looks custom(at least I think it does.

Car Info: 2016 Acura RDX ... meh. Um, nice subwoofer?
Its pretty straightforward. The little plug with the jack can go anywhere in your car. Were it up to me, I'd put it in the center console near the stickshift. Run the cable under the center console or behind the dash to the rear of your headunit. Its a matter of individual taste, not rocket science.
