Capacitor Required?
I am going to get two JL Audio 10W3v2 subs for my 02 WRX Wagon. They will be powered with a 600 watt mono sub amplifier at 2 ohms. I had a couple of questions.
1. Will I need a capicitor to keep my lights from dimming?
2. Will the amp get too hot if I mount it under the passenger seat?
Thanks for the help.

You need 1 farad cap for every 1000 watts you pushing out, so yeah you probably do. Good choice on the subs btw my cousin has them in his Is300 and they hit hard as hell. I am not sure if the amp will get hot, what kind is it?

Yeah I was looking at a 1 farad capicator. I guess I'll mount it under the seat with the amp. I want a system that when I take the subs out you won't be able to tell its there. I like being able to fold my seats down and throw a bunch of stuff in the back.
I was thinking about getting a Pioneer GM-D510M. Its 1000 watts peak and 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms. The speakers are 4 ohms each but in series they'll be 2 ohms so it should work out. I was also considering an Alpine MRD-M501 which is 550 watts RMS. If you had any suggestions on amps they would be appreciated. Thanks.

FYI: Mono amps run much cooler and more efficiently than multichennel amps, due to "class D" circuitry. ...So I bet you're okay on the heat issue, but fans are always recommended in high wattage apps, just to be safe.
And yeah- a 1F cap would fit your needs.

Fans aren't necessary, i have an amp under each seat in my car, 1 class d 1 class a/b, both get hot but never so hot i'm scared. On the cap, don't get one they are a waste of money. I have 1500W of amp in my saab 9-2x and the lights barely dim at the highest i dare turn it up. I was actually impressed, but yeah, caps don't really work, they are just another strain on your battery. If you don't believe me search on www.termpro.com and look at what the pros say about them.
edit: kinda hard to find cause their search sucks, but this sums up the general idea
http://audioforum.termpro.com/cgi-bi...;f=40;t=013838 most people agree that it's WAY better to get a better alternator if you have the money or at least a yellow top

For what it's worth, nobody can predict if your amp will need a fan or not because there are way too many variables to consider. These include but are not limited to....
1) Type of amp, Class A, A/B, D etc.
2) This goes with #1 how efficient your amp and install will be. Did you use the right size wire, do you have a proper ground, do you have much storage capacity like larger battery and cap etc.
3) How well the amp cools itself, some amps do a better job at cooling
And lastly and most important is how loud and how long you are going to play it.
The heat in the heat sink is a byproduct of making power and the more power you make the more heat you will generate. So if you listen to it loud then you may need a fan.
As for a storage cap.....Not all amps will benefit from storage caps as much as others but storage caps DO WORK. They help stabilize the voltage that the amps see and that allows them to work more consistently and efficiently. There are always variables and not everyone sees a huge improvement but they do work.
Infact, the most common reason a person wont see a gain with a cap is because the cap was too small. The 1 farad per 1000 watts idea was developed by two friends of mine, Dave Navone and Richard Clark who are the reason we even have storage caps to buy today. I used to work for their company Autosound 2000 where they design and sell high end audio products as well as consult for such small companies as Kenwood, Monster Cable and Soundgate. You can't have too much capacitance, 10 farads per 1000 watts is great.
Good Luck
