Big problems- Stereo install. Please Help me...
Well a year ago I installed a small sub with built in amp. In order to get it to work I converted my outputs from the factory head unit to RCA cables and ran them back to the sub. Worked.
Then I decided to add an amp so I could do my front and rear speakers. I did the rears about 8 months ago. And it was good. But I was holding off on the front until I had time and material and spacers to get the job done.
Well one problem I noticed was this whining noise when I first hooked the amp up. Sounds like it is coming from the hood so I am guessing it is the alternator. It is this strange whin that is affected by RPM. And now I hooked up one front speaker to the amp and the noisse got worse.
I am scared of what it could be. Any ideas? Any suggestions?
Also how did you guys mount the crossovers in the door and the tweeters?

Just make sure you find a good solid metal spot wherever you decide and putting the ground. And definately make sure to scrape away the stock sound deadener before grounding if you decide to do so. It will melt and then spark and then you could be looking at worlds of trouble. What also might help is upgrading your ground wire from the battery to the chassis. I also have begun to experience this noise problem and with 10 seperate speakers it is really obnoxious at low volumes. For mounting the cross overs there are a couple ways to go. Behind the stock door panel down to the right on the new subaru's there is a big space with a lot of styrofoam. YOu can remove the foam and that will give you a little cavity in which you can cover up a X-over mounted to the door. You can use backstrapping to mount it or what might be easier is just run another wire back to amp and mount the X-overs back there. Good Luck!

The ground loop isolators did not help. They actually made it worse. Not sure why. I thought they would help.
My last idea is to take the back seat out and ground the amps to the seat belt bolt. That should be my best ground.

rule of thumb........ your ground wire should always be twice as big as your pos wire or at least close to it (whatever guage you are using from the batt to the amp make sure your ground is bigger) ......... i have an 8 guage pos wire and a 4 guage ground wire never had a prob. with car noise...... try that.... it might help. remember your ground completes the circuit of power to your amp and if the ground is limited then so will your juice to the amp.

I have power on left side of the car and RCAs on the right side.
The only place they come close is at the amp but that is eneviatable really.
I don't see why I need a bigger ground cable. I think the same size cable should be fine. I am runniing 4ga. so I think that is ok.
I noticed today that if I turn the radio off I get the sound. But if I pull the RCAs out thne the noise goes away. A friend said that my problem probably lies in the RCAs because if it was a power or grounding problem then I would still get the noise even if the RCAs were pulled out. Does anybody agree or dissagree with this?

I am not sure. I thought they were shielded but now I don't know. They are not the highestqulaity RCA cables.
Tonight I went out and changed my grounds and wired a ground from the head unit to the ground in the read. And the noise is still there.
Yes there is a noise even when the car idles. Even with the radio off. But if I pull the rcas with the car running then the noise goes away. So my last thing to do is try new RCAs and run them outside the car to see if they work. I know there are some other noise filter devices like GLI with noise filter- I purchased GLI and they made it worse so I am scared to get more stuff. That and I saw a RF interference reducer that was cheep.
I jsut don't know what to do next. This is killing me.

Ok man here's the deal. I'm a stereo installer so I hope this helps. Your first big problem is the fact that you haven't invested in an aftermarket headunit yet. A cheap alpine unit like the 9801 has a sub leve control built right into it and there is no need to convert to rca's. Second, ignore what the guy told you about needing a bigger ground than power wire. Always match sizes. Same current in and out. Third, I imagine that you are using a bazooka tube or something similar. In that aspect there could be your total problem. With car stereo, especially amplifiers, the better the amp the better the sound and less the problems. If you buy good name brand equipment you won't have nearly the problems that you have with cheap crap. I have seen sony amps buzz and squeal like yours but slap in a JL amp and all is well with the world. As for making a better ground, just make sure that you scrape all the paint away from the metal surface with a wire brush and make sure you use a solid piece of the car like the trunk floor (always pay attention to fuel lines before drilling). If you have a voltmeter and measure ohms then your ground should be less than .5 for optimal grounding. As for alternator whine in general...it is one of the hardest things to troubleshoot. I recommend that you pick up a new amp and sub and stay away from all in one combos. But if you must, check the path that your rca's run and make sure they are not running past a fuse box or other part that could cause a lot of elctronic interference. Oh and if you want to try ground loop isolators again, get ones you can ground. That might help.
Good Luck

Well here is the deal. I started small with just the sub. And I did not want to go to extream lengths. But as time went by I decided to do more and more. But the one thing that I really liked was the 6 in dash CD changer and I wanted to keep it a double DIN cause that just looked better to me. So that is why I kept the factory head unit.
I have a lanzar amp and Infinity Sub. The small sub that comes in its own enclosure. Actually sounds great.
I am not made out of money and I can nto just go buy another amp and sub and hook it all up. So that is crazy for you to say. I need to find a way to make what I have work. I appreciate constructive ideas and help from people on the board. And most people really try to help. So thank you for the suggestions but I need help making what I have work.
