better quality sound

hey,

basically i'm going to do some stereo work. I'm already getting a basslink, but as for sound quality should i upgrade the speakers, or just get a new head unit? my passengers, including myself, find the quality of the sound quite poor.

thanks a bunch!

btw.. are the stock HUs good anyways?

o yes and think about dynamat/raamat. it will increase quality by a lot and reduce rattling.

unless you already have the basslink don't get it. Its designed for trucks not to be in the trunk.

why do you say it's designed for trucks? It's just your ordinary affordable powered 10" driver.

back on topic, don't go with the basslink if you're looking to do significantly better than stock. upgrade the speakers and put in an amp...i suggest the JL 300x4...that's 75x2 for the front components and 150x1 for a sealed 10" sub. you can choose whatever brand of speakers/sub that suits your taste, but bear in mind that the sub will only get 150w. upgrade the HU if you'd like; if not, get a navone line out converter.

that should be a decent "low-cost" setup!

jeffrey...if it means anything, i think the stock HU's aren't bad at all. it's a stock 6 disc changer that gets little to no attention from thieves.

for over a year, i used a navone LOC in conjunction with the stock HU and my amps. it sounds fine and i really did like (to emphasize once again) the low theft appeal factor. sound quality was not bad...midbass was a little high, especially at higher volumes, but it is fine unless you're 16y.o. and want nothing but piercing tweeters and earth shaking bass.

since then, i've upgraded to an Eclipse DVD unit, but that's b/c i wanted A/V for the car.

you can also run a search to read up on how others feel about the stock HU. i know this topic came up in the past.

Thumbs up Agree with BlitzSTI

I have 6.5" MB Quart separates up front and 5.25" coax's in the rear...

Alpine 7996 DVD/MP3 Head Unit,

7" in-Dash Screen and

7" flipdown Screen on the roof...

Alpine 5-Channel amp and 2x8" JL Audio Micro Subs in the trunk...makes a huge difference over stock...

as far as a HU with a good amp prebuilt into it...it depends on if you want ample headroom...a HU has an amp maybe rated at 50w/ch...but that is typically max... or do you want a 30w/ch competition amps that typically hits high in the 500w/ch area...You will notice a big difference in quality of sound...

cheapest ive found so far.
mb quart 6.5 premium components
http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1781

my recommendation would be a hu and speaker change but with 3 bills, if you can live with your stock hu then get he mb quarts. if you need all 4's then you can get the reference series 5.25 which are ok but 6.5 in the front is the best. i guarantee you wont be dissapointed.

Ok, I'm new to this forum but I'm pretty big into audio. I have over 8 grand invested in my cars. I can still help you though. You dont need to spend a fortune on stuff all at once. Do it in stages. First, get a LOC (line output converter - converts speaker wires to RCA), a decent 4ch amplifier, and some Rattlemat. That will probably run you all of your money.

Wiring kit $50 on eBay
4ch amp ... keep your eye out on eBay, I see some RF units for <$200. Get something that's 50Wx4 to start and it will make a world of difference than stock.
NE-774V LOC $35 davidnavone.com
Rattlemat door kit (front doors only for now) $50
