aftermarket speakers for WRX, watch out.

it is possible to find 6-1/2" speakers that are too deep for the front doors of a WRX. i bought a pair of Focal Polyglass 165v2's about a year ago. they were much to deep and the windows would not be able to close if installed as a direct drop in. so, we made some spacers. we had to make them about 1" thick for everything to clear.

sounds good, right? they sounded amazing until the first time I listened to something with a lot of bass. the speakers would actually hit the grill on the door card. some careful tuning of my decks crossover got rid of this problem, or so i thought. it finally sounded like one of them blew, so we took the doors apart to check it out. the surrounds on both speakers were fuxored beyond belief.

i'm now running focal 165vSlim speakers without a problem.

cliff notes: bigger is not always better with speakers. watch out and measure carefully.

Should I just go with 5 1/2's? I am looking at the Polk Momo 6 1/2's (MMC650) with a mounting debth of 2.7"

it's kind of a trial and error thing. if they're close to the depth of the stock speakers you'll have no problems.

Unhappy

I tryed demoing the PBX components and they are deep. Too deep. Im glad you already trialed the ring because now I know it isnt going to work. Sounds like I need a custom enclosure.

you can run a search for what other subaru owners have installed into their cars. certain 6.5" speakers will fit into the stock location with a spacer (can be bought online for $20).

focal 165v2's will NOT fit, like you mentioned. you need the slim line and even then, spacers are a good option.

i'm running 6.5" diamond audio hex in front with spacers.

I put in pioneer 3-way 6.5 all the way around and it sounds great. I let bestbuy put them in. $32 to install each pair. Well worth the money. The bass is great matched with the factory sub. I now rarely put the stock headset over 8. With the old speakers I would have to put it at 10 or 11 and that's with the windows up. For about $70 a pair thesse speakers are great.
