10" sub vs 12" - whats the real difference
Guys, I know this is a dumb question, but is bigger really better?? what exactly is the difference? Would a 10" sub give you a tighter response or just less of a pump? Would you always recommend to go with a 12" instead?

i would definatly recommend 10". that is just personal preference though. everyone has there own opinion on which is better. 10s are faster but dont push as much air, 12s push a lot of air, but are slow. it also depends on what type of music you listen to, mostly rap-go with 12s. a lot of different types, techno, pop, rap, country, go with 10s. also, dont waste your time with cheap subs, they will not sound good at all and will deteriorate in time

Not cheap depending on the models, but worth the money? No
The difference in 10" to 12" is that the 12" can physically move more air then the 10" woofer. What the can mean is that it can go louder given the same wattage and same theil-small parameters.
But there is usually a tradeoff in sound quality when choosing between 10" and 12". Smaller woofers tend to be a little more controlled on fast tight bass notes over their big brothers.
Give each a listen at a car stereo shop and get what YOU like. I could tell you my personal favorites, but my ears are different from yours.

I would definitly recommend a good amp. Many people out there buy a big *** sub or 2 and have not enough power going to them. Thus it makes it sound like crap. It is an investment of both amp and sub, and it increases in price when you go larger. I had a 12" w/ a pretty good amp (before it was stolen) and was very pleased with the way it sounded. So as they said choose what sounds good to you, and what you have the budget for.

longish reply from a car audio nut.
ok, new here- sorry for the intrusion, but Ive done a lot of work with car stereo, and do all of my own installation (including building boxes, amp racks and the like)
the reason a 10 is faster is because 90% of the 10s and 12s out there share the identical diameter voice coil. so, if you are pushing less square inches of speaker cone, its going to be faster.
If you can find a 12 with a larger voice coil diameter (about 2 inches) and a 10 with a 1 1/2 voice coil, they should sound the same.
another thing is the speaker enclosure- ported, sealed or bandpass. those all make huge differences in sound, and what low notes the speakers hit at
if you are a sound quality nut, like me, then 10s or 12s in a sealed box are the way to go. If you want to pi$$ off the neighbors and out-thump the guy at the stoplight, then bandpass will be the way to go.
as far as price of subs, its what sounds good to you. keep in mind that most bass notes are not directional and will sound completely different in your car, so, see if you can test the whole setup- box, sub and amp. (also a good way to find out if your audio shop are good guys)
hope I didnt do too much damage.
cheers!

I bought a set of 10in fosgate punch h2's and hated em. They sounded ok the first day but after about 3 months they went to sh*t. The foam injection around the sub started pealing and i decided they wern't worth keeping and sold em for Polks. I got 2 GNX's 12's in a box for like $200 and love them. As for 12's or 10's, if you want thump with a big amp get 12's, if you just want it to sound good in your car get 10's. Just don't get cheap subs. You'll regreat it.

old school rockford is tit. new stuff is kind of crappy, its all over-rated because they sold out to best-buy and the like. they are still good subs, but just not as good as in the day. i wouldnt buy em, but thats just me.

I'd say go for the Rockford HX2's, I had one 10 and it was louder/tighter than a pair of Pioneer 12's. Quality for price is what it boils down to.
I gave the 10" HX2 to my Girl, and I'm stepping up to a 15" HX2 dual 2 ohm voice coil
