04 WRX Door Speakers- Upgrade
I am considering upgrading all 4 speakers in this new car. According to crutchfield, they recommend on an 03 WRX 4" component speakers or 2 way 4" speakers for the rear doors. And nothing for the front. Seems kind of small! I haven't had the chance to pull the door panels off to see what's actually there. Will 6.5" components fit in the front doors and 2 ways fit in the rear doors.
Also, I noticed the rear deck as some weird shape cut outs. With some custom work, speakers could probably fit there possibly 6x9's 5x7's or 6.5". I believe this would sound better there than in the the back doors. Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts?
What component speakers would be a good upgrade? For now I plan on keeping the stock head unit because of the 6 disc changer. Now standard on the 04. No under seat bass unit though.
Thanks
Mike

I gave up trying to stuff anything in the rear door, I installed mb quart 6x9" in the rear deck of my 02 wrx. (looks similar to 04 sti, except i noticed a small black box with wiring that was bolted to the underside of the pass side cutout).
Anyways as far as 6x9" go they fit (mb quarts), but with some adjustment and careful cutting of the metal plate under the rear deck. It was close too, if you arent careful you might lose the functionality of the 3rd seat belt, luckily i barely made it with clearance.
I would say its worth it , but im not quite sure i would do it again. I used the dremel for cutting the metal (carbide blades), there might be better tools that will make it easier (i went through 3 packages of blades!!!) for the 6x9" install.
Im running 3-way 6.5 co-ax in the front and 3-way 6x9 in the rear, no door speakers.
feel free to ask any questions.

6x9 Speakers in rear deck
Thanks for the reply. I've used those dremel carbide cutting discs before to cut metal and I see your point. I'll have to think about it. Does mb quarts make 2-way 6x9's. I am not a fan of 3 way speakers (typically too "trebley" for my ears) Maybe mb quarts are better, I don't know them. I just saw a brochure in an audio store the other day.
The 2004 WRX has the same box and wires on the passenger side under the rear deck.
Approx. how much sheet metal needs to be removed? Can you send a picture or two?
Thanks
Mike

6 1/2" components in front, use a 3/4" adapter if you get
speakers with 2 3/4" deep. The rear doors can be 5 1/2" coaxials, no need for adapters on the rears. If you can't make
your own adapater buy it from East Coast WRX.
Oh don't forget you need some bass with that.
Atleast a single 10" in the trunk will do.
