for the lazy:
S.F.'s Castro party turns violent, with 7 shot
Seven people were shot as a Halloween street party in San Francisco's Castro district wound down Tuesday night, police said.
The incident occurred about 10:40 p.m., as authorities began dispersing some 300,000 of revelers under a new curfew that was aimed at controlling the traditionally raucous event.
Two people were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and five others also were injured by gunfire, police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said.
Two people were detained in the shooting, although no arrests were immediately made, he said. The motive was unclear.
The violence was reminiscent of the city's 2002 Halloween party, when police responded to five stabbings, recorded a number of assaults and confiscated a chain saw among the crowd of nearly 500,000. The once-spontaneous and unsanctioned party was taken over by the city after that event.
Officials and members of the district's gay community said the party began attracting gay bashers along with the usual colorful costumed characters over the years, and many gays stopped coming.
Tuesday night, city officials had boosted police presence by 25 percent, reduced the number of entertainment stages from three to one and cut off the festivities at 11 p.m. amid concerns of more violence.
The parties since 2002 had been relatively peaceful, if still boisterous.
``It all depends, year by year,'' Gittens said in 2003.
No incidents were reported in San Jose early this morning, but authorities in Santa Cruz said there were two stabbings just before 11 p.m. Tuesday amid the city's downtown revelry.
