I took me 5 years attending the Academy of Art College ("University" now) majoring in New Media design (that's a whole slew of random computer-related design crap) to get my degree and I never changed majors. I got a couple jobs here and there. During my last semester of school, I worked for a well known vendor here doing design stuff for about a year. It was good experience. Then I got my first full time job with a start up company late last summer, but ended up doing a bunch of other stuff that aren't design related since start-ups are like that.
I started to question my career choice. Eventually I hated my job and what I have to do everyday, but later realized it wasn't a bad career choice, it's just that the job wasn't ideal to what I wanted to do. So I quit 2 weeks ago. Even though I didn't get to do as much design stuff as I'd like, I did learn a few new tricks and learned what I need to improve on or work on to get to the next level. I got a better understanding of what kind of work environment I prefer. Back to the drawing board and I'm just taking some time to refocus on what I really want out of my career. Although the money helps, I realize that being happy with what I do is the most important. If I'm happy with what I do and I'm good at it, things will fall into place. I really don't want to wake up and go, "Sh*t, I have to wake up at 8 AM to go to work." every single day for the rest of my life.
Enough of that rant, as long as you're content with what you're doing. That's all that matters.
