Torque convertor shop question....
Hi,
I'm finally mentally and financially prepared to put a high-stall TC into my automatic. I originally was planning on hitting up Protorque for the TC and having Subyspecialties do the install, but when I call to touch base w/SS and ask a few questions, they brought up a place called Rancho Transmissions in Temecula.
Have any of y'all ever dealt with them?
Does anyone have a better suggestion other than Protorque for the TC?
What about the install? I was originally thinking about checking in with Ryan at SPImotorsports for the install before getting so many recommendations of SS. BTW, on a side note, according to the guy i spoke to at SS, they've only had experience putting a TC in one other WRX like mine. SHould that worry me.
Trying to keep from getting cold feet, but man it's chilly....

Tony at Rancho Transmissions ROX. He was the main man for the development of the torque converter for the Knight Motorsports rally cars. After spending thousands of dollars to keep their manuals together with their 500+ (HP and torque) engines, they went to the autobox with complete reliabilty...after Tony tweaked them They also built a WRX for the street that has "1.4 sec" 60' times (SCC was doing the testing for a future article) annd even made Josh @ SCC smile, which is quite a feat They also convinced Easystreet that manual tranny's can't take the abuse of a "HIGH HP" motor...one side note though, they (whole tranny)do cost $5-10K depending the bells/whistles/engine power and it is NOT off the shelf...you give it to Tony and depending on his racing schedule, he will deliver! One other side note, a high stall speed torque is GREAT for the drags but a DRAG for the streets. If you are just trying to get more out of your "60 foot times" try this: At a stop put the tranny in 2nd and maintain your braking. Then step on the gas and watch the RPM and BOOST go up (boost won't go up in first per factory programming), then drop it into 1st (with the boost already up) and hang on/ get ready to shift to 2nd/3rd/4th. Remember, Rancho Transmissions for all your tranny problems and Suby Specialties for ALL the rest

Aye, there's the rub...I'm not into dragging, and I haven't planned on starting to autoX until next yearm so for the moment I'm just a normal Joe who likes to drive his 4eat too fast and has happened into momentary chunk o' "mad money. I've already got the Cobb reflash, a bit of exhaust work, 17 inch wheels and Kumhos. I'm pretty happy with everything except for the fact that at traffic lights miini vans are smoking me for the first half of the intersection -- my buddy recommended a high stall TC, but him being a car nut, I was worried I was using an elephant gun on a fruit fly, hence the call to SubySpecialties...
It sounds like while Rancho rocks, a high stall TC might be the wrong tool for the job. Any recommendations on a right one (either a single major mod or additional small ones)?

I don't understand why it's a drag on the streets. IF you have a super high stall TC then I can understand why it wouldn't be practical.
My driving experiencing on the streets rocks! I don't have to brake torque, just mash it and go go go.
