I was shot at on the 91 Freeway in LA!
Tuesday, March 06, 2007
It was getting late last Friday night as Scott and I were putting the finishing touches on my rally car. We had stripped off most of the pink vinyl graphics, gave her a bath, and Scotty put on a clean white windshield banner. We loaded the rest of our stuff into the car and left for LA.
At about 10:45 that evening as Scott and I were calculating the accurate tire pressure for my upcoming rally on Sunday, we were about half an hour out from LAX where Scott would be flying out to WRC Mexico the next morning. We were heading west on the 91 freeway nearing the 605. In compliance with Google maps’ directions to head north on the 605, Scott signaled and began to merge right once we reached the broken double yellow line signifying the designated exit from the carpool lane into the “fast lane”. Traffic was light but Scott double checked his mirrors, the next car was considerably far off. Apparently our speed of 65mph wasn’t enough, given that by the time we’d fully gotten into the fast lane that car that was a ways behind us before was now right on our tail. Quick to act, Scott began the merge into the number 2 lane anxious to get out of his way. That must not have been fast enough for him either because he merged right behind us.
That’s when things got scary. The car shot over back into the fast lane and speed up next to us. The driver then pulled out a gun and opened fire! Scotty’s window had been open and he instinctively started rolling it up. As the car, which we could now identify as a 2000 White Chevy Monte Carlo, passed us with trigger pinned, I grabbed my phone and dialed 911. As I fearfully awaited 911’s automated recording to be replaced by a live operator, the Monte Carlo then hit his brakes causing our car to once again become side to side with his sending another round of bullets our direction. Still waiting for the public service announcement to conclude and a live operator to connect, the Chevy then tried for a third time to litter my poor rally car with lethal blasts. Scott was ready this time and as the assailant mashed the throttle and accelerated toward us, Scott slammed on the brakes sling-shooting the Monte Carlo far ahead of us this time. Apparently he decided to take this opportunity to flee the area as he continued accelerating and weaving through traffic.
Finally a 911 operator answered and in a loud and clear voice, I said, “We are traveling westbound on the 91 freeway passing the 605. A white Chevy Monte Carlo is shooting at us. The license plate number is 4JUG541!”
This is when I realized that the incompetent moron on the other end of the phone line hadn’t been listening to me, but instead trying to talk over me to ask the questions that I’d already been giving her answers for. So again, I repeated myself, “License plate number 4-J-U-G-5-4-1. They shot at us with a gun! 4JUG541, it’s a white Chevy Monte Carlo. We’re traveling west on the 91 freeway passing Downy Blvd. He just cut across 5 lanes of the freeway and exited on Lakewood Blvd/ Hwy 19!”
My dad once told me that if my mouth was open then my ears weren’t. Apparently no one ever taught this particular operator that lesson and she continued to try and speak over me causing me to have to repeat myself yet again. While I had initially been waiting for 911 to connect in the first place, I’d grabbed my other cell phone and attempted to reach 911 on that one too. Somehow I connected to Scott’s voicemail instead and the 911 conversation that I did have ended up being recorded on his voicemail!
After we’d gotten out of the area, we exited the freeway and found a near by gas station. We let the 911 operator know where we were stopping and even though we also let her know that there was a sheriff sitting at the stop light at that very intersection, it took a nerve-wrenching 45 minutes for an officer to respond! On my car there were three heavy indentations from the bullets. One of which actually came through the lowered window and fortunately hit the roll cage located less than an inch from where Scott’s head had been! Once the officers did arrive, surveyed the damage to my car, and listened to the incident happenings, they looked up the license plate number we’d given them. Officer Tao then told us that the car was registered to a female by the name of Deborah. Since the registered owner was a female and the description of the person shooting at us was a male with a shaved head, they said the most they could do would be to send out a letter to the registered owner notifying her of the incident. They didn’t take our names or fill out an incident report! Welcome to LA.
The reason for my letter is to make fellow travelers and local residents aware of the recent happenings in the area.

Thanks guys. You here about this kinda sh*t on the news, but you never think it could actually happen to you. The bullet that hit my roll cage would have hit directly at Scott's temple had the cage not been there!
:shudder:
Please be safe and keep a look out.

glad to hear that no one got hurt. no witnesses at all? there had to be drivers following who saw the flash of the gunshots going off in the monte carlo. well, even though, cops appear to be totally useless in this situation unless they were actually there at the scene of the crime as it happens.
