Subaru says <1qt per 1000 miles of consumption is acceptible (not really on new cars, but on their slightly older ones).

I beat on my car during the break in time and still dont lose that much oil.
I check it about every 2 - 3 fill-ups and always before I take it in for service. Now that I have so many miles on the car I must say I dont check it as often
