Better "cold" start protection. I only switched to 5w30 because I'm up in Reno where it got pretty cold this winter.

How many quarts does the WRX take (I'm lazy and don't have the manual with me)?

it's like 4.8 or something. Just get 5 and check as you fill.

Are there any local places to get K&N oil filters?

I'm pretty sure not. Not worth the $$$ anyway IMO. Just go to pepboys and get the purolator...

or get one of these: http://www.cmfilters.com/

Autozone has them and Pepboys or at least used to. In WRX I used to put 4 and next day I would check the level and add as needed. 4.8 sounds a bit to high for WRX. I put that much in STi and that fills it up.

Edit: Tagnitos (sp?) has them for sure. It's a big store on the corner of El Camino and Fulton right acros from Chevy dealer. I bought one there for the WRX. They are the only store that had the proper size. Autozone had some but nothing in the WRX size. Pepboys had very poor selection. And FYI oil on the filter is bad for O2 sensor and performance gain is next to none.
