All Americans are fat and lazy including me; Those "cozy, cushy" Americans won't buy a compact, 4 cyl turbo WRX for comfort. That's the reason why there are still 2006 wrx premiums with $4500 off sitting in car dealerships. All the TR manuals are gone and all that's left of 06,07 wrx's are cozy, cushy ones. I understand what they are trying to do and I respect that they are enterprising enough to go that route. I just wished they didn't make the stupid mistakes that they do i.e. the svx auto only transmision, the 1st gen Tribeca front grill, the hatch only sti and the list goes on.

The WRX is falling behind in sales because it is no longer the segment leader/definer. Performance has not substantially improved and cars like the Mazda 6 and even Camry and Accord are strong alternatives to those who don't want a race car, just not a boat. Despite the Joan Rivers-like facelift history, it's an aging platform that has not substantially improved in 6 years since introduction. Moving with the rest of the market segment is the only option for Subaru. Bringing in the hatchback is a good move because it pushes the WRX into a less crowded market- performance hatchbacks that don't cost a billion dollars to maintain and insure. Well, maintain anyway...

Quoting the Subaru dealer representative, "We are taking the rally out and making them cushier. Studies have shown that we will sell more cars to the U.S. market if they were more user friendly. We also think that the die hard rally fans will love the new STI 5 door." So to answer, because they are un rallying it and/or stupidity and/or turning thier backs on the true enthusiasts that brought the wrx this far.
