I'm so bummed that they chose to retire Petter's car. How long is the time penalty for engine change? 8th place was 16 minutes down from 1st. Petter could've at least try for a point or 2? And what's that rule about time penalty for the next rally too?

This year there's a twist to the altitude element in Mexico. As part of new cost-cutting rules for 2005, teams must now use the same engine for two rallies in a row. Engines are sealed after each event and, although teams can test the engines on a dynamometer and replace ancillary components, such as the turbo or exhaust systems, any work on the engine's internals is strictly forbidden. If a car completes the first of each pair of rallies, but requires an engine change, a 20-second penalty is added for the second event. If the car retires, however, an engine can be changed without penalty.

Solberg also suffered terminal engine damage on the final stage of the rally yesterday. Although he would only have picked up five minutes in missed stage time penalties for the failing to complete SS6, Subaru have decided not to risk damaging the engine further and risking compromising a victory push on the next twinned-engine event in Greece.

Team Principal David Lapworth commented: "Clearly we're disappointed that Petter is unable to continue, but concern about the extent of the damage makes it unwise for him to do so. On SS4 the air-filter on Petter's car became heavily clogged with sand and gravel. Running in this condition for many kilometres has led to a number of concerns, and was the cause of Petter's problems at the start of SS6.
In the circumstances we felt it would be better to withdraw from this event and be ready to challenge for victory in Greece* rather than compromise our chances by aiming for a points finish here, with a question mark over the extent of the damage to this engine."
* In normal circumstances, competitors must use the same engine for the WRC rounds in Greece and Cyprus.

Geez its only a 20s penalty.
Hell, if I run the team I'd run really aggressive engine mapping and take the 20s penalty on every other rally by having a fresh engine on every rally
But if their fresh new engine is having problem already, in Greece it'll probabaly blow up and burn the car down anyway.

Okay, I believe that the rules were clarified regarding the two-rally engine rule on 30-Mar-2005. Here are the current FIA WRC rules (Adobe Acrobat .pdf).

Let Petter's mishap serve as a reminder of what can happen when you remove the stock airbox.
