Congrats dude! I didn't know you were still hunting.
It's weird, I work for a health related company and the benefits aren't the greatest and they have no retirement plan at all.

I also may have some web design lined up on the side for some of the doctors on the research side. A little grant money on the side.
It's cool cause it's a 75% position with full benifits so I'm working like 30 hours a week and still making enough $$$ to be comfortable and have family time.

Congrats on the new job. UCD is an excellent choice for an employer.
For all of you who are complaining about a lack of benefits and retirement, I've said it before and I'll say it again:
LOOK AT WHAT IS AVAILABLE WITH THE STATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You won't get rich, but you will have some significant job security, plus a pretty good retirement. And, I would think they're really needing IT & System Admin types, which it seems that many of you guys have the skills for.
Pay a visit to the State Personnel Board website in your spare time-
www.spb.ca.gov. See if you want to take one of the tests. If nothing else, getting on a state employment list is just another option in your overall employment strategy.

CONGRATS!!!
I take it you are going to work in IS? If so I feel sorry for you, people there are dumb dumbs when it comes to computers. I just spent the last 12 hours dealing with some of our “finest” and their inability to use a computer or create a PowerPoint presentations. YAY for being in Vegas on my works dime and stuck in a room with those folks for 12 hours at a off strip casino
The benefits are pretty cool though, there is like 7 health plans to pick from. I personally really like Kaiser about 90% of the time. It is all about finding the right Dr. and knowing how to work the system. You will find that with any health plan though. I call my OB and he gets me in that day if I am having problems. Most health plans don’t cover OB visits for pregnancy till about 12 weeks (private practice docs won’t see you till then either). I had seen my OB 3 times by 12 weeks plus had 3 ultrasounds already. Far superior coverage, IMO. Rates just went up at the new year, I think it is $7.50 a month now for me and Scott and when we add the baby it will be like $9. They have like 3 blue shield plans and stuff but those were all closer to $100 a month plus only covered either 70% or 80% of all costs.
