Ok, so here is my deal. I pay the guy $750 for 3 stage paint job with 2 coats of clear, but I have to take care of all the dents and sanding the whole car down (paint with 800 grit, primer with 600). I have an experience with bondo, fiberglass, etc working with all my previous POS project cars before so can save some money now.
It's a lot of work if you are gonna go with a different color.
I have to drop off my car on August 14th, have less than 3 weeks. Started already body work. My car looks like a crap.
When I drop my car off I'm gonna take headlights, taillights, fenders, bumpers, spoiler, sideskirts and doors off my car. Sounds like lots of work but one thought , that my WRX will be clean one day "gives me wings"...just like Red Bull

It's not a Maaco paint job. Other paint jobs cost 3000 cuz of body work and all the **** that takes weeks. My paint job is cheap because I do all the prep, cover and tape everything up and take everything apart before spraying, 2pt of paint and other chemicals is gonna cost like $250 and the whole process of spraying 5-6 hours (then baking for few hours), basically paying only for paint and spraying so...500 for 5 hours is not cheap

750 is average for just a spray. Not cheap but not expensive. I'd be a little worried about taping it up myself, because there is WAY more to it than most people think. Having at it with a roll of tape will result in massive overspray and ugliness. I hope you've taped up many cars before and know what you're doing.
bodywork also goes without saying. there's more to it than just slapping on a layer of bondo, smoothing out, primering, smoothing out and spraying.
do you have extensive experience and skill?
I don't think "having previous POS projects that I did body work on" really counts.
Good luck

That must be some seriously CHEAP paint.. I recently painted 3 racebikes with PPG DBU..
The paint / primer came out to around 800 bucks.. For JUST the paint.. And Deltron DBU is sorta middle of the road PPG stuff..

Yeah I just read.. only 250 for the paint / chemicals.. That Kragen / lacquer paint territory.. Good luck.
Like I said up there.. $800 for about as much paint as you are buying for $250.. Thats a gallon can in the picture, but there are only 2 quarts in it..
Good paint jobs cost a ton because paint costs.. Yes the labor is very expensive too... But believe it or not, the paint itself is a huge factor.. If I were planning a "decent" spray on a car I'd budget at least $1500 for the paint / chemicals alone.

so what's the problem??? is it too cheap?
@Vlad - I know what I'm doing with body work, saying my POS previous cars I didn't mean some 1983 Pontiac but 1999 Integra GSR, 1997 Eclipse GSX, 2002 RSX Type S
@bouncer - don't know where you get ur paint from but I got 2pt of PPG paint for $265 , I have all the other chemicals from painting other car
I don't go to Kragen, it's good for ppl that are looking for a shop to put downpipe or replace headlight bulb for only $999.

ppg has a very wide array of paints. Some of their cheaper paints can cost a lot less. But you have to factor in all of the chemicals.. Not just the paint.. You need reducers for the paint.. Reactive reducers / hardners for the clear.. Flex agents for panels that might see some flex.. The clear costs a lot.. Primers.. Adhesion promoters.. Cleaning supplies..
And you should also be using a guide coat on the primer to make sure you flatten it out well..
It all adds up to quite a bit of $$...
I've spent as much in sanding supplies as you're spending on your paint.
Ask the guy exactly what kind of paint he's planning on using.. And not just the brand..
For the amount of work you are going to put into prepping the car, you really want to go with some good paint thats going to last..

I'm not gonna go cheap with prepping
Just wait till my car is painted, then we'll talk
I have 3 more weeks, started prepping , slowly but surely paying attention to details
