New Project-Need Help
I recently acquired a 1965 VW Beatle. This was given to me by a family member and has been sitting in a barn in Plymouth for the last 15 years. I checked it out yesterday and is fantastic shape with ZERO dings or dents. I think this will be a cheap and fun project. Does anyone know of any helpful websites/forums for me to get info.?
Any help greatly appreciated.

WOW!!! Those must be orginal german fenders straight from the mothaland!
65 was a good year. If it's all stock then the first mod i recommend you do is the 6 volt to 12 volt mod.
That way you could run better headlights and bigger engines.
umm as for forums you could try vw vortex. (gosh it's been a while since i've dabbed in teh aircooled stuff.) I have tons of books on them i can give you the titles when i get home.
There is bugformance in sac for all your part needs.
What are you planning to do? Alll stock or a subie killer?

Simple to drive. Cornered better than just about anything except an Austin Healey Sprite. The back seat got hotter than blazes during the summer and front seaters had to shout to be heard by the passengers in back. Seemed to run forever at 70 MPH on the freeway.
In the summer heat of the Central Valley VWs would overheat and it was a common sight to see them pulled off of the road and burning up.
Such low power that if you weren't at cruising speed, the accelerator was always mashed to the floor. Two speeds: cruise and floorboarded.

Thank you Soggy.
I plan on getting a Scat crank/rods/pistons, CB Wedge heads. Close to 200HP. My Gramps is very good with VW engines (he says they make good generators) so he will contributing much help.
The car is a little oxydized but under the hood the paint is all original Brick Red and still glossy. I would like to paint the car bright red with some whitwalls and steelies. I plan on lowing it alot but I would also like to get a Wide-5 front and rear disc brake kit. Will I see any problems with a wider wheelbase on a lower car? I know I will get EXTREME camber in the rear but are there any tricks to keeping it somewhat trouble free?
Lastly, is my car a Type 1, Type 2? Do I have Link-pin or Ball-joint spindles?
Thank you again.

type 2 = bus
type 3 = wagons, fastbacks and notchbacks
You got the link-pin set up. The Ball-joints aren't introduced till 67.
OO look into the engle cams. I had a 110 engle ca. Made the car sounds sweet.
oh and if you could get one, get a scat shifter. BEST SHIFTER ALL AROUND
For the rear since it's a swing axle there is really nothing you can do about the camber issue. Just don't lower it too much in the rear and you should be ok.
I use to have an 1841 balanced with dual webber 44's
hehe
Getting the engine balanced was well worth the extra scratch.
