Moving to Travis AFB
I've been asking around the forums I frequent about information pertaining to Fairfield and Vacaville. I'm moving out to Fairfield this fall, more specifically Travis AFB. Just wanted to know what the surrounding cities are like and where would be a good place to live. Don't mind commuting a little but don't want to spend an hour driving. Figure the Sacramento forum might be a little more knowledgeable.

unfortunately both Fairfield and Vacaville are kinda just commuter/military places to be. not the best of places but honestly not the worst either, it depends on if you're looking for nightlife or anything to do. Sacramento, Napa/Sonoma, San Francisco, etc. are all the more lively places but farther away. Not sure how I can help, but hopefully that at least gives you a little bit of an idea

^ agree its basically what you are looking for in a city... Out of Vacaville/Fairfield I would pick Vacaville. I grew up in fairfield for over 18 years and wished I lived in Vacaville. Maybe in Browns Valley or (hate to say it) but near the Prision in Vacaville, nice areas with shopping close by. Also would check out Cordelia, near Costco. But again it all depends on what you are looking for in a city and if you plan on buying or renting.

I plan on renting. And I'd prefer to rent a house in the nicest area possible for my budget, $1400 a month. My most important criteria is that the city is somewhat safe. Or at least safer than say, Oakland. I'm not too concerned about night life and stuff.

Moving to Elk Grove isn't worth it. I waste about a quarter of a tank from elk grove to Fairfield. It's 11 miles less than driving to San Jose. From Elk Grove to Fairfield it would be an hour drive, and a distance of 53 miles(106 miles round trip). Elk Grove to San Jose, 117 miles. Unless you have another car that saves a ****load of money on gas like a golf tdi or something don't bother.

Not to sure about the commute from Pinole, depending on what time you work in the mornings it shouldnt be to bad because I believe most the traffic is going west when you would be going east... and likewise on the way home.
Maybe someone that lives in that area could help?
I would also post this in the BAIC, a lot of people live in the Vacaville/Fairfield and Pinole/Hercules area
