Nah, it's not too bad in the server world, it's just a pain in the ***. Goofball *** problems always exist and you don't have the same ease of use and stability as UNIX platforms.
The thing that annoys me about Linux/Open Source is when you want to load an application there are specific packages and versions that are required to be installed. For example, I was trying to get Bugzilla working on a Windows box, it required me to load Pascal, and a ton of other packages and I ended up just giving up on it.

Otherwise, Linux is pretty cool since you can really lock it down, plus it's free!

I just read your post again, and my brain finally registered that you may be looking for an actual Unix OS... Most of those are unfortunately proprietary to a company and/or fairly expensive. One exception I know of is SUN Solaris (I think they're up to version 10 or some such), which can be had for free.

You could also try FreeBSD, which is also based off of Unix.

Lots of possibilities out there. :]

see, we had a long discussion at work as to use windows or unix as the OS for a console we're developing. the opinion of our lead software engineer is that windows by itself is actually very good, it's bad drivers that make it teh suck.

"Thanks in Advance" is the typical use of TIA on forums, I believe.

Then using TIA turned in to some gay mating call for a few people on the forums. It's annoying.
