so what does a worn out CV joint sound like? I am supposed to diagnose whether this is the problem on a family member's friend's car tomorrow. I know to look for a torn boot, but what sounds should I listen for? I'm not going to be able to lift up the car and take of the wheel/move it, I'm only going to be able to drive it and listen.

move the steering wheel to it's max positions than start either going forward or backward, do all combo's. you should hear a clicking. it could be quiet or pretty audible, depending upon the condition of the joint. this usually will tell you that the outer joints are bad.
the inner ones could be harder to diagnose, especially if the boot is not torn. under accel/deaccel there should be like a muffled popping/clicking as if something is loose.
either way.. a torn boot is almost a dead giveaway...just stick your finger into it and run the remaining grease through ur fingers.. if it feels even the slightest amount of gritty the joint is on its way to fail.
