Hey all phone/tablet techs!

my hp laptop is on its way out, and im looking for a replacement computer. so of coarse i can get a new laptop and get a pretty good deal. but yesterday i spent a few minutes playing with the new verizon droid bionic with the attached lap dock. after playing around with it and doing a little bit of research last night, it seems like it could replace my computer. i can download windows, or use google docs, it comes with a full version of fire fox, etc etc. the age old problem that everybody has, does anybody know if there is something better around the corner? should i wait?

i also have been looking into the keyboard/tablet combos to try an accomplish more or less the same thing. anyone think that would be a better option? only concern is if i go this route, this combination doesn't, in my opinion, differentiate to much from a laptop.

opinions and advice please!

As for phones that are around the corner? WAIT!!!!! There are bada** phones being released next month! Android News - Android Google Phone Forums
If you are on a budget though, none of these phones will be less than the Droid Bionic price, but far better in performance!

If they have that laptop dock option, IDK. I have never used the laptop dock option, and I don't know how much it is but it sounds cool.

As for alternatives... I really like 7 in. Tablets, not a fan of the 10 in. But Samsung recently released a 7 in Galaxy Tab that is BOSS, but there are already rumors of a replacement.

Just a few questions...
How much are you willing to spend? What OS? Time frame of purchase? Do you need a new phone too? Or just a new computer? What kind of work will be done on the laptop/tablet?

i was looking at the site you linked and cant really find any information about the up coming phones. can you link an article or page?

and im willing to spend a little extra doe....as long as it will be worth it

yes, that galaxy tab is pretty awesome. i had a chance to play around with that to. i have to do some more re search but from what i saw, the only keyboard attachment doesnt have a mouse pad. im not sure if it supports bt or ir. i cant yet rap my head around not having a keyboard and mouse pad.

essentially the question im trying to figure out is if current technology is there to have a "mobile" device that can successfully replace a laptop. of coarse depending on the set user.

as far as your other questions, i was planning on all this being my Christmas gift. but if there is something BA coming out on the 26, i can wait

i don't immediately need a new computer but im getting close. (dropped it one to many times and screen is half broken off)
i dont NEED a new phone either (i have the droid incredible) but its getting annoying that i cant download half the new apps because it says "not compatible with this device."
and if the bionic or another phone can fulfill my computer and phone needs effectively, than yes i need a new phone, if you catch my drift

as far as what i do i my computer, i mostly browse the web and do school work and download torrents. and im pretty sure it will be a pain in the *** to download torrents on a droid. i have heard of people doing it. but i can just use my fiancee mac to do that. i think its not a big sacrifice.

For sure. I linked some articles. Well with a tablet and keyboard option, I am pretty sure the mouse will be gone. The iPad is a great device to do what you want or any tablet for that matter. The iPad is just super easy to use, but if you are good with Android then I say galaxy tab. Timeframe for tablet releases is unknown, that usually happens during summer months. Cell phone releases are right before the holidays.

I'd say keep your Incredible and go with a Galaxy tab. I just think that having your phone plugged into a dock while trying to text or make phone calls just doesn't make sense to me. With the tablet and a phone, it is the best of both worlds.

That droid razr looks fabulous! But at the cost of like 700$ I'll have to buy a used one. Most of the dual core phones start at over 600$, I bought my phone outright at the 599 mark (fascinate) and its a great phone.

I 'want' one of them new shiny devices but I think I better stop looking before I talk myself in to dropping a bike payment on a phone instead haha.

yes they are expensive if your not eligible for an upgrade but yes it is very sexy. i love where these new phones are going to. the ability for it to basically be a computer and plug into a lapdock or plug it into any monitor and or tv and use a mouse and keyboard, i think is amazing. this could be the start of an idea that makes desktops and laptops obsolete. i can't wait to see the progression of this.

dont drop a bike payment! lol. just wait for an upgrade and than sell your phone on ebay or gazelle to help pay for it.

hey mrSilas - ive been back and forth in this arena of thought for a while now; I already own a mbp, ipad1, iphone4, htc incredible, archos 9 tab (win7), hptx1000 and have been searching for the holy grail of ultimate portability vs usability since the first tablets hit the market in 1999...

until now, as will be forever, nothing's perfect.

there are a billion factors to consider, use, battery life expectancy, apps needed/desired, aftermarket support etc etc like any device.

my gf recently got the asus transformer (didnt buy the dock yet) but I'm really liking it - has all the features of a laptop with the portability of a tablet. my ipad1 sucks compared to it lol.

how portable do you need to be? i prefer a tablet to phone with a dock simply for the sake of using one device with a big screen - my phone is it's separate entity, so if one goes down, i don't lose all my abilities to surf the web etc.

TL;DR
so not that my post has much relevance i suppose; i would just say to look into a tablet with keydock / bt keyboard vs a phone w/a dock...

Likewise with the integration, I read a lot of SciFi to pass the time and one of the things that look like they're right around the corner are foldable phones. (they already have foldable LED screens that are color), next would be making the whole thing roll-able. Imagine taking something the size of a no.2 pencil and rolling a 10in screen out on a desk .

No I doubt I will, if anything I'd sell my fascinate for 300$ or trade someone who hates one of the newer phones for my phone .
There are some crazy people out there!

wow! you are quite the gadget guru i wish i had more money. thanks for your input man.

that tablet would be nice. at home have the bt keyboard and mouse etc. and just take the tablet everywhere else i go. (thats how i would use it)

now the of the questions im struggling with is finding the pads "place" in my life. and if it has more to offer than a phone with a lapdock.

ok sorry as i take you along my thought process. as far as capabilities and power, resolution etc. the razr and new tabs or more or less the same. with the tab you get a bigger screen. and its always one size. cons its not also a phone. with the razr ie its basically a mini tab that is also a phone. the attachment of peripherals is more or less the same except of the added screen when connection the droid.

when it comes to it, after thinking all of that, big portable tab, no phone. small portable tab that is also a phone.

before i make my decision, i want to try some of these tabs connected to keyboards, mice etc. to see if the ergonomics of the OS are THAT much better than the droid connected to a lapdock or monitor.
