HELP! Clunking sound!

Hey guys, I really didn't know where to put this so I figured I would try putting it in my locale city thread.

Anyway, I just recently noticed it, but I started hearing a clunking sound when in 2nd gear (sometimes 3rd) under 2500 rpm. It usually happens when I let off the gas.

I've looked up some stuff on other forums but they all heard their's while ON the gas.

I don't know what's going on! Is it a loose tranny mount? Or is it a rear diff mount?

It's kinda scary =/

My straight pipe on my old wagon used to clunk hella loud when I was off the gas downshifting. Maybe your exhaust is loose and hitting the frame. Mine was right at the end of the downpipe too so it felt like it was the tranny. Other than that, not sure what it might be. Could he tranny mounts. Could be your tranny giving out? You do have a 5 speed so it's not uncommon

If you downshift and engine brake do you hear it too? It should be more like a popping clunk than a thud if that makes sense.

If so, it's just the bushings, you can get the klunk-killer kit by TIC

YEAH!!! It's a lot louder when i let off the gas and engine brake. I can still hear it if I let off the gas at 4k rpm, but when it goes under 2.5 it gets a bit louder.

it might just seem louder because of less road/engine noise at lower rpm.

What's happening is the rear diff is bouncing up and hitting the floor of the car when you let off the throttle. The rear diff support that bolts to the rear subframe (whisker bar or something like that I think) has soft bushings in it which allow enough deflection for the diff to bounce up and hit the floor.

TIC Klunk Killer is good and will solve the problem by replacing those bushings (and the subframe outrigger bushings). $70
TIC's Unabomber's Sexy Rear End kit is the same as Klunk Killer but also has subframe lock bolts. $95

I bought the Perrin version because it was cheaper. $55 for equivalent to the Sexy Rear End kit with lock bolts, outrigger bushes, and diff mount bushes.
perrin performance subframe-diff-lockdown-kit

However, the Perrin kit only comes in one durometer (hardness of the polyurethane), while TIC offers comfort (softer) and race (harder) options.

TIC's website says 02+ Impreza. I'd give them a call though, they might be able to piece some things together.

Do you know the part number by any chance? I haven't been able to find it on the whiteline or rallysport site.
