Going to Tahoe with friends

On our bikes. Yah, pedal pedal bikes. We plan it to be about 20 hours of riding total to get there and will split that into two, 10 hour riding days. I am interested though, in the best/coolest/funnerrest route to take. Obviously following hwy 50 is not going to be any fun.

Um...

As a cyclist, have you considered how hard this is going to be on your body? 10 hours on the saddle is a lloooong time. Add to that the fact that you're climbing 5000+ ft..dude...yeah.

I'm not saying you can't do it, but you should consider some training before hand, as well as planning it out.

FWIW - www.crazyguyonabike.com will give you tour journals. From there you should check out http://www.adventurecycling.org/ for maps and such.

Good luck. One suggestion I have is wear a bright, highly visible vest or shirt so you can be seen.

Starting where, Sacramento? Road bikes, mountain bikes?

Either way, the highways will probably be the easiest because there aren't too many trails through Desolation Wilderness (and with all the high passes, you probably wouldn't want to do them anyway).

If you are really motivated to do this, I'd consider going up 88 to 89.

honestly the mileage isnt THAT bad. its the climbing that will do you in.

if you are already riding 150-200 miles a week at a good pace, with the right gearing and good on bike nutrition this is probably do-able. painful, but do-able.
