I know those myths, but I'm saying if you had the same engine tuned for 87 or 91, would they be at the same efficiency?

Yeah 91 doesnt contain any more energy that 87, it just takes more to ignite.

You could have a map custom made for 87 by a tunz0r

but doesn't it have the potential to burn more completely?

Nevermind, I thought there was an 87 octane map, just checked and didn't see one. Will the "Anti-Theft" map help with gas mileage?

I only fill up once every 2 or 3 weeks anyway, so the gas prices don't have a huge impact on my finances.

No... in a car that isnt made for it it will actually burn LESS completely because it will ignite later.

91 is 87 with extra paint thinner added (basically)

just to add something to the discussion, i know that the 4th generation Preludes with the H22A motors (which require 91 due to high compression) lose a LOT of mpg if you try to run 87.

that and they also run like crap.

i know that this doesn't mean the same thing will happen with a subaru, but it's still food for thought.

OK put it this way. The scoobys have what a 15.8 gallon tank so for easy math we will say you didnt run it bone dry. So your gonna fill up 15 gallons. Gas at joe blow gas station wants $4.15 for 91 and $3.95 for 87. YOu would save $3. thats not even one gallon of gas. I mean ya 3 bucks is 3 bucks. BUt just shift before 4k rpm and you should be ok. If you wanted to save on gas why did you buy a subie?

I would never put anything but 91 in my car. Thats why I bought my wife a prius. All th money she saves in gas I can put into my car. Shell, Chevron, or occasionally costco gas. NOthing else goes in her. I have torn down to many engines to put ROTTEN ROBBIE gas in my car's Honey Hole (good one Mr. Furley)

I'm not a fan of Chevron's techron. I use shell as often as possible.
