It should be considered powertrain.

yea i got the extended warrenty and carmax (which i got the extended warrenty through) said they wouldn't fix it cause it's only a "filter" but i figured it was a recall and the dealer should be fixing it anyways.

Well, that's the problem... take it to a Subaru dealer, since it's still under factory warranty.

alright... so i pulled the two filters out and the one on the driver side was a little clogged with some golden flakes (least it looked like it) and the other was clean. i cleaned them both out again and installed them. now the check engine doesn't come on but i now have white smoke coming out the tail pipe (which smells like oil) any ideas...? oh and another thing... when i last did my oil change is when the check engine started. when i did the oil change i used moble 1 and restore 4 which i was thinking might have clogged it..

correct me if I'm wrong but white smoke is coolant. Yes I believe the "gold flakes" you saw were from the Restore

gray / black smoke is running rich
blue smoke is oil
white smoke is coolant. if you're getting white smoke, smell it to see if it smells sweet like coolant.

what ban suvs said, head gasket. it would be a good idea to not drive the car anymore until you get it looked. you run the risk of warping the head or even worse if it overheats too badly.

not sure if this trick works on subies since the oil fill cap is so high up, but usually you can look at the bottom of the fill cap and look for white residue. it will kind of look like a cooked egg white, that is another indicator of a blown head gasket.

alright so here's what's going on... i did a oil change again with some of that motor flush stuff. the check engine light never came back on and i didn't even have to change out those filters. when it was smoking i made an appointment to bring it to the chico subaru which i did the other day and they called me up and told me that the bearings on the turbo was VERY bad and that warrenty covered it so they have already ordered me a new sti turbo. so i should be getting car back tomorrow night.

If I was a betting man, I'd say that the Restore crap smoked the turbo bearings.
There's no reason to use a can of voodoo on a motor w/ 41K on the clock.
