Yeah you can find the accidents on CHP site. I also use www.sigalert.com. They seem to be pretty accurate and real-time. Careful of Google traffic as they use typical traffic speeds and particular times of day to predict traffic, so it's not always correct

Channel 10 seems to be pretty decent. They have travel times, too.

So I'm usin' the CHP traffic reports to see if I can figure out 2 days back when the road was closed, and catch a Fire between Bradshaw and Excelsior near Jackson on a report that happened 2hrs ago?!?

I look out my window and that nasty poof of smoke is close by >< and I hear police sirens here and there probably tryin to make sure the fire is put out!

GO AWAY GRASSFIRE GOOOO AWAY!

If you click the 'change' link next to the live traffic option on the google map you will see that it says:

Data is predicted based on past conditions
So it's not 'live' at all.

Sigalert, however:

A. The speeds that you see on our site come from sensors Caltrans has buried in the freeway.

Comprehension > You

When you select the "Live traffic" radio button, the traffic is reported live (not sure of their method of data gathering).

When you select the "Traffic at day and time" radio button, then "Data is predicted based on past conditions" is un-grayed and the predicted traffic is displayed.

sigalert is nice though because it gives extremely detailed information (if that's what you want).
