its good to see you have your head screwed on straight though. its the people like you that i would say it is ok to start on a 600cc supersport. the reason being is that you understand that they arent slow, and are high performance machines. youde be careful, and respect it while others that think they are slow would go WOT in first and loop it their first day.
have you done the MSF course or riden anything in the past?

LOL.

i want to get a bike to commute to work with (yeah its only 30 miles, round trip but i get tired of driving a car).
plus my wife REALLY wants me to get a bike, cus she loves to ride.
i really dig the SV650s (love the way the twin sounds w/ a nice pipe!), but i bought a FZR400 from Scott years ago as a project and had to sell it (Nate has it now i think) but i kinda fell in love with the bike. never got to ride it, but like it for its rarity and handling.
plus i can get a used FZR400 for under $2000 with classes and gear, where a SV650s i'll be into it at least $5000 in the end.
i am prolly gonna sell my '71 N600 and get a bike this spring.
if i find a great deal on a SV and the timing is right i will prolly jump on it since it will take me & the wife around better than the 400.
my other choice would be to find a late 90's or newer Honda VFR. i have a tendency for the twins...
if i really get into bikes i'll prolly end up on a ducati cus my wife's uncle has a bike shop and is a really good duke mechanic!
