Official SCCA classing for the STI is AS, BSP, SM, or STU depending on your mod level. For the WRX it's DS, ESP, SM, STU. For ESP, there's a big stink going on over on sccaforums.com. Seems there are a bunch of musclecar weenies that want the new 08+ WRX moved into BSP, where it will not be at all competitive. The worst part is the SEB is actually taking this seriously, so I may be selling my car for an STI if I want to continue autocrossing. *sigh*

One of the reasons I sorta abandoned the SCCA... couldn't take the whining and bickering over dumb crap.

SCCA classing consists of several Categories (Stock, Street Prepared, Street Touring, Prepared, Modified), and each Category has it's own Classes (Stock: A-H, Street Prepared: A-F, etc). The lettered-classes separate various car models/types.

The best way to understand it is to download the rulebook:

http://www.scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=61

The link to the rules is about halfway down the page. In the back of it, it lists the various categories and classes and what cars fit into each.

For example, a stock WRX starts in D-Stock (DS). Once you do certain mods, it goes to E-Street Prepared (ESP). If you go past its allowances, your next best step is STU (Street Touring Unlimited) and then to Street Modified (SM).

The STI starts out in A-Stock (AS), goes to BSP, and then to STU and SM.

If the other ESP people (mostly Camaro and Mustang drivers) are successful, the 08+ WRX will get moved into BSP along with the STI. The upside (if there is such a thing) is that the WRX and STI will be listed on the same line in the classifications, which means you can update/backdate parts between the two models... so, a WRX could use the STI's transmission if you wanted, or vice versa.

What us WRX folks are hoping for, though, is that the 08+ cars will stay in ESP, but will be listed on a separate line from the 02-07 cars. That will prevent somebody from taking an 02 and dropping an 09 powertrain into it, making a sub-3000 lb car with 350 whp (or more), which would become a class-dominator.
