Has anyone driven on the Utah Salt Flats???
I was just curious as to whether any of us subaru owners have driven on the salt flats, near salt lake city, in Utah.
I have been itching to take a drive there, at some point this summer... (talk about mileage...) but I figure it would only be worth it for me, if I would be "legally" allowed to drive on the flats.
It's been a dream of mine for quite some time, and I would like to fulfill it, if I have the opportunity. Any comments would be appreciated.
Later, and TIA,
i.

Yes, but only to get out to the paddock area to meet up with my buddy Richard who was trying to set a land speed record for the 2 liter and under sedan class.
As a matter of fact, I just drove past Bonneville yesterday at about 11am. I've been seeing way too much of that place. You'll find out why shortly

Hey Gary...
So, is it legal to drive on the flats... at any point of th year? Or are there special permits/licenses that a person must have to drive on them?
Any info. would be cool...thanks.

I'm pretty sure it's closed right now due to the winter rains. It takes awhile to dry out.
Even then, I don't think you can just go out and drive around.
Poke around in this site: http://scta-bni.org/
There may be info regarding when the flats are open and to whom.

anyone else...
have any info. on the salt flats? Is it true that a person cannot just go there, and drive around, for a little while? What will the repercusions of something like that be? Cops coming to get me? and giving me a ticket? or something else?
Thanks for the link Gary...nice information there.

I think it's a protected area. It would definitely be closed now because the salt is still wet and any driving on it will put large ruts in it.
Even when it's dry, it would be my guess that the salt used for Bonneville is protected. But I really don't know for sure.
