USTCC Subaru WRX Powered by COBB in 2003
Martinez, CA: Sheehan Motor Racing is proud to announce that Cobb Tuning will be powering their Subaru WRX entry in the 2003 U.S. Touring Car Championship.
Cobb Tuning is primarily an engine tuning company focused specifically on enhancing the power delivery of Subaru engines. Cobb’s expertise ranges from simple bolt on parts to full blown custom-modified fire-breathing racing engines. Cobb also has an in-house chassis dynamometer that allows full testing and tuning ability for each of their creations.
Cobb will be building all of Sheehan Motor Racing’s Subaru WRX engines to be used in the 2003 U.S. Touring Car Championship. Although USTCC rules do not permit internal engine modifications, Cobb will be ensuring that all race motors are fresh and performing at their maximum.
In addition, Cobb Tuning has the unique ability to reprogram the factory engine control unit (ECU) for optimal power output. This eliminates the use of aftermarket piggy-back units that intercept signals from engine sensors and trick the ECU into producing more power. Direct access to the factory ECU gives unprecedented control of engine management while retaining all of the strengths that have been engineered by Subaru. The end result is a fully functioning factory ECU that provides clean power.
“We are very excited to have Cobb Tuning managing our engine program this year,” said Gary Sheehan, the team’s manager and driver. “Cobb built race engines controlled by the factory ECU and dyno-tuned in-house at Cobb will be the most consistent and powerful engines to go into our Subaru WRX.”
“The engine program required for USTCC presents a new and exciting challenge for us,” said Trey Cobb, managing director of Cobb Tuning. “To have full control over the USTCC Subaru WRX engine program is a fantastic opportunity and we’re looking forward to working with the Sheehan Motor Racing team in their bid for the championship.”
Cobb Tuning been based in Salt Lake City, UT since relocating from Texas in 2002. Cobb Tuning’s most recent success was powering the AV Sport Subaru WRX rally car to winning the 2002 U.S. Pro Rally Championship. OK, sorry if this has been discussed here before, but i just have to ask...
Why is Sheehan Motor Racing switching from Vishnu to Cobb for engine management? I have a Vishnu Stage 0 and love it. And, one of the big selling points is that Team SMR was using it as well. Several of my friends also have Vishnu equipment in their WRX's and have had awesome results.
I have heard a ton of good stuff about Cobb as well (not the least of which is price). I guess I am just curious what changed to sway you from one to the other.
Also, in the info about the Team SMR WRX on teamSMR.com, it still lists Vishnu components in the engine mods section.
