A Prayer for Possum Bourne...
This is a sad day for Rally.
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/20...381898957.html
Friends and family of New Zealand rally driver Possum Bourne are keeping a 24-hour vigil at his bedside after it was decided yesterday to gradually decrease his life support, leaving his chances of survival at "virtually nil".
A statement issued by the family last night said the brain injury Bourne received in the car smash on April 18 was severe and continuing "full life support is no longer in Possum's best interests".
When contacted, Possum Bourne Motor Sport general manager Murray Brown said the life support would decrease gradually. The process started yesterday afternoon.
"His chance of survival is virtually nil," Brown said. It was not known how long Bourne would be able to "hold on", Brown said. "That's something no one knows; it's anybody's guess."
Bourne has been in an induced coma in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit since the smash during preparations for the Race to the Sky hillclimb near Cardrona, Central Otago.
The decision to stop life support was made by his family with advice from medical staff. The release said the extent and severity of the injury was not fully apparent until last weekend, when ventilation support was decreased, but he deteriorated and had to be put back on full support. A brain scan confirmed the severity of the injury.
Mike Barltrop, the driver of the other car involved in the crash, was discharged from hospital last week after having surgery on his left leg.

Bourne's life support turned off
His injury more critical than expected [28/04/03 - 16:33]
New Zealand's most famous rally driver, Possum Bourne, was taken off full life support at the intensive care unit at Dunedin Hospital following his road car accident of April 18.
Bourne suffered from severe injuries but The New Zealand Herald reported that further evaluation today, which included a brain scan, revealed that his condition is even more serious than expected. Bourne's family issued a statement saying: "The extent and severity of the injury was not fully apparent until this weekend just gone, when ventilation support was decreased but he deteriorated and had to go back onto full support. Continuing full support is no longer in Possum's best interests."
Possum Bourne's accident occurred while the experienced rally champion was preparing to take part in a hill climb event near Cardrona in Central Otago. His road car collided head-on with another vehicle going in the opposite direction. Bourne has been in a drug induced coma since then.

subaru press release
Subaru pays tribute to rally legend Possum Bourne
General News
30 April 2003
Possum Bourne, New Zealand's most successful rally driver died peacefully surrounded by his wife Peggy and their family in Dunedin Hospital at 0:58 30 April.
Possum never regained consciousness after being involved in a traffic accident on the Snow Farm Rd in the Cardrona Valley near Lake Wanaka in Central Otago on Good Friday, April 18.
He was air lifted from the crash site with head injuries and two broken legs to Dunedin Hospital where he remained in the Intensive Care Unit in an induced coma ever since.
Possum's wife Peggy, his mother, two sisters, brother, other close family members and friends have maintained a 24 hour bedside vigil over the past 12 days.
Possum's medical condition has been monitored constantly, including several CT Scans.
Following a series of neurological tests and the latest scan a decision was made to withdraw the life support system.
On behalf of Possum's family I would like to thank the staff at Dunedin Hospital for all the care they have lavished on Possum.
The family would also like to acknowledge the thousands of emails, faxes, cards, flowers and other messages of support they have received over the last 12 days.
At this time the family does not wish to make any personal statements and I would ask you respect their position and not intrude in their time of grief.
Possum is survived by his wife Peggy and three children, Taylor, Spencer and Jazlin.
Possum was a great man. A great sportsman. A great New Zealander. A great son, brother, husband and father. His spirit/memory/legacy will live on.

We starting this discussion on nasioc but I thought it appropriate to post here and let everyone know
Jamie and I are working on a tribute sticker for Possum. Brett from MRT is at the funeral today and will be talking to the general manager of PBM on our behalf about what we are doing and gaining their ok and hopefully official access to the possum logo
The plan is to make a modest amount on each sticker above the material and postage costs, the proceeds of which we will wire to the Trust fund that has been setup for Possum's family
There is a number of designs being kicked around but here are 2 cut-out style ideas
I will let everyone know once the design is finished what the details are
