How hard is Rally-X on a car?
I have a mildly modded 98 legacy and am wondering if I rally-x'd it would I destroy it? Basically I just want to make sure that I dont destroy my baby that I have to drive daily as well. In addition, my current wheels are 17's, would it be a better idea to downsize for racing?

Rally X
Hey Their,
I ran Rally X last year in my brand new 2002 WRX and it was all set up for the street / track not at all for the dirt I made it just fine and almost the top 10 list. The corse a Thunderhill is very smooth very easy, mainly it's up to you and how fast you go!!! the only thing I saw was a flat tire ( rolled off the rim). If you get a chance to do it DO IT!!! It's easer on a car then a day at the track you just don't get those top speeds (Like 115mph at Buttonwillow) and you only drive like 2 min. 5 times. I'll be their on Sun., Silver WRX with blue STI on the wing.

I think it is not that hard as rally, but definetely harder than auto-x. I think Subaru's can take it.
However, I will never do that to my car.
For one, you will never EVER be able to get all the dirt out of it.

Most fun you'll ever have though and it gives you a whole new appreciation for how well your car grips on tarmac.

I did my first rallyx this weekend in jean, nv. it was a dry lakebed. lot's of dust everywhere. I took the precauton of taping up the front bumper, fender openings, and behind the wheels. No paint damage. Also have a Primitive front skidplate. A few other tips to avoid dust/dirt in your car (which is almost impossible to completely get out):
- keep your air on recirculating, never go to vent mode while in the course
- tape all the door and window seams of the doors you are not using. dust got in under the doors on my car and as soon as I opened it, woosh, in went the dirt.
- think about getting cavity sealer. there are a bunch of holes under your car that dirt gets into and when you wash the car, that dirt turns into mud. i'm thinking of filling all those with some expanding foam.
- keep your door closed and windows rolled up as much as possible
- have fun!

i havent participated in a rally x, but i lived 12kms up a dirt road and drove it every single day 2 or 3 times, and my 92 legacy got dirty, but heck, it is a subaru, it is meant to get dirty. as for the standing up part, i took mine into a TSD last month (my first one and it was a blast!) and it was fine. even, a toyota echo was alright. so i would say, dont worry about it, and hit up the next rally you can.

I did one in Maine last December.
The main thing I wish I had that I didn't have was a skidplate. The skid plate reduces most of the fears of breaking or puncturing stuff. With a skid plate, even a simple bolt on front engine area skid plate, the day is wicked fun.
