Are you trying to go nikon or canon? or no preference? I would suggest a used body and good lens as well.
I am currently on my 3rd Body, started with a D70 -> D80 -> D300 ...hopefully D700 soon...haha

Nikons are good at low light. Better then Canons. Canon does have nicer glass then Nikon.
You might wait, if you could for mirror-less cameras. It's long overdue and hopefully should be coming soon.

When I was researching what camera to get I frequented Ken Rockwell's site ( http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm ) He does give reviews for stuff other than Nikon from what I was specifically looking for. He also has pretty good photo tips/tutorials too. I ended up getting a Nikon D40 & Nikon 18-55mm VR lens for roughly $300, but this is in Japan at a used camera chain. I went with the D40 because I'm learning and didn't want to dump a bunch of coin into it and from what Ken mentions...the D40/D40X/D60/D90 and maybe one other are fairly similar enough that a person new to the hobby wouldn't notice/take full advantage of it just yet.

When I was researching what camera to get I frequented Ken Rockwell's site ( http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm ) He does give reviews for stuff other than Nikon from what I was specifically looking for. He also has pretty good photo tips/tutorials too. I ended up getting a Nikon D40 & Nikon 18-55mm VR lens for roughly $300, but this is in Japan at a used camera chain. I went with the D40 because I'm learning and didn't want to dump a bunch of coin into it and from what Ken mentions...the D40/D40X/D60/D90 and maybe one other are fairly similar enough that a person new to the hobby wouldn't notice/take full advantage of it just yet.

I generally check dpreivew. For Nikon users there is also a forum for us. www.nikoncafe.com really great place for information. and classifieds (need 300 posts)

Hmm I have read several places that the exact opposite is true. Nikon lenses have much better optics, but Canon has the sensor thing dialed if you're after extremely crisp images. Nikon seems to produce images that have a much more film-like quality to them.
However, my experience is limited to shooting weddings with a D700 or a D3. That said, I can absolutely attest to Nikon's superior low light capability.
If you were even considering video, I would think more seriously about Canon. HD video shot on a 5D is nothing short of incredible.

You should also look or call around other best buy's to see if they have open box deals. Then you can have some money for a lens to play with too. I currently have a Nikkon D40 for a starter, it's workin' out pretty well.

I have never really used the video. It is bad *** but I dont do video
I personally think its a moot point. you can chose between 24p and 60p 1080HD (i hope i got those numbers right)
