My cable bill used to be $8.85 a month in 1987 (NW Cable Co), and has went up about 10% a year since then, now just under $40 a month. Still not any more good channels, a lot more shopping networks, and international channels, but nothing better on or better picture quality. (Non-digital/ no box) ....this got me thinking.
On a general comparison with income vs. buying power this is what a quick calculation came up with.
With job promotions, cost of living adjustments, inflation, and general wage increases I have only averaged about 5% a year pay increase over the same time. 1987-2003
Total tax that I paid back (1987) then a year, after adjustments was about $4000 a year (22% of my income), compared to the $21,000 a year now (40% of my income). This is property tax, fed tax, sales tax and other taxes.
My house back in (1987) sold for $169,000, now it is worth $450,000. Wish I had bought it back then. It would have been paid for, and my money would have gone a lot farther.
Over the last month I have noticed every bill I have, water, electric, gas, phone, cable, insurances, etc, every thing has had a huge jump. But all the Feds reports say there is practically no inflation right now.
Soon I will have to start canceling services
BUSH, WERE THE HELL IS MY TAX REDUCTION/REBATE??
Just did a inflation comparison from http://www.bls.gov/
Using this calculator based on Consumer Price Index http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl
In 1987 my $14,500 after all taxes income had had a buying power of $23,470 of today’s inflation value.
This compared to my 2003 $35,500 after all taxes income had a buying power then of $21,320.
So now with inflation factor I am living off of $2,150 less Buying Power than I was back then with my little starter job.
I have what is considered a pretty good employer (Boeing) for wages, but after doing the comparisons I am loosing ground fast.

Well, here we go off-topic again!
For all of you cider fans, I found Strongbow on tap at the Cajun Bayou in Redmond.
For those of you that haven't visited this place yet, it's one you don't want to miss. Excellent food, and excellent beer brewed on site by Far West Ireland Brewery.
Okay, Back on topic now!

Really? How long ago was that? I've only been there once and had something that was nasty. Everything else, from the burgers to the hot wings rocked. And the beer's very tasty too. What type of beer did you try?
