Tribute: A Different Kind of Project (Subaru WRC '01 R/C Replica)

**ATTN: Mods. move this if you want, that is, since it's not 'really' a car project**

While I'm still searching for a '05 WRX in the Bay, I thought I'd get myself involved in my other hobby in the meantime -- R/C. I've been into the hobby since '99, but have never built this kind of project.

This project includes two (okay, three!) of my most favorite things -- R/C, Subaru's, and WRC. I thought I'd do a tribute to each of those things.

Throughout this project, I will post pics...then at the end, a movie...in the dirt!

Start Date: 7/11/05
End Date (Hopefully): 7/20/05

So far:
AE TC3 Chassis (4WD Shaft-Drive)
Novak Cyclone C2 Speed Controller
Trinity P2K Pro 27x1 Stock Motor
KO Helios Computer Radio System

List of upgrades coming:
AE TC3 Rally Conversion Kit
HPI Pirelli Rally Tires
HPI '04 STi BBS' style 10 spoke Wheels
HPI Subaru WRC '01 Replica Rally Body
Trinity D6 10x2 Mod Motor
HPI 'WRC Tarmac" style 10 spoke Wheels
HPI Yokohama Advan Tarmac tires
AE Graphite Wheel Hubs
Maybe Carbon Fiber goodies?

What custom mods I have already done:
Mudflaps
Electronics Radio Box (scrapped for better enclosure later on)

I like the idea of this project...as long as we're not subjected to everybody and their mom doing the same types of posts.

Finally got done with the main chassis. Tested it outside and looks like it runs in the mid 40mph range to low 50mph range (on freshly charged battery packs). But I'll gear it for dirt later on for more acceleration

I also painted the tarmac wheels. I had to mask them off since these are already mounted and I didn't feel like un-glueing them.

Looks pretty clean to me. Masking off all four front and back took around 30min.

To do list:
- Paint Subaru WRC '01 Body
- Make some kind of cold air intake for the motor to cool down (planning to stick some air filter foam on the roof scoop of the body then use some kind of bracket underneath with a hose attached.
-Film

blue blurr: Yeah, it's an HPI body. Wish they'd made the MY04 in the rally scheme.

that looks quite nice. good job on the masking, too. i was a flat white or matte black lazy-paintjob kind of guy back in the r/c days... much too lazy to create something of that caliber.

Sweet project! You know, those TC3's can jump a lot better then you think. I got mine maybe 10-15 ft in the air once. They weigh so little that they actually land ok.

Just watch out for rocks getting stuck in the steering rack. They will get it stuck turning one way or another and you will immediately crash it. How good is the rally kit?

awns729: Sorry still working on the full movie. Not enough footage and too busy. Music in the 'teaser' video is called "Where is my mind" by The Pixies. Maybe I'll edit in some real WRC footage to take up some time.

CrashMaxx: That is very true. This is probably why we didn't get enough footage. Too busy cleaning out the car for debris.
