Gc8
I'm pretty new to Subaru, Just wondering what GC8 or GC6 is. Is there a difference between american and canadian specs when it comes to 2001 imprezas? and while im asking questions, if anyone has the time and patience to explain exhaust to me, such as up pipes and downpipes etc. thanks

You bought this for yourself? I've got a feeling the parents helped out a little (don't be ashamed -my dad bought me my first car)
As far as your exhaust- you don't have an up-pipe or a down-pipe (those are turbo components) you just have (from front to back) headers, a couple cats, midpipe, resonator, and muffler.
oh, and as far as exterior mods... I'd paint the sideskirts to match the car, maybe get a front lip, get bronze 17" rota torques or tarmac IIs (or any darker color 17" rim), window tint- then I'd really be jealous.

Congrats!
Technically, your car is a GM6 (M = coupe, C = sedan; 6 = 2500cc 2.5L, 4 = 2200cc 2.2L). Most commonly GC is what they call the "Classic" Impreza body style. The GC8 = Impreza Sedan 2000cc 2.0L (wild guess!); older STi models.
Anyways... welcome! BTW, I'm a coupe owner myself... gotta love 'em!
Cheers!

financial help
Hey Scoobsport,
Good call, actually I am going into my final year of University, and I wasnt planning on getting an Impreza until I graduated, but this one came up and I knew I couldnt let it pass. It only has 11,600 miles on it, an STi carbon fiber sway bar, carbon fiber trim in the interior. The car was imported to Canada from California by the original owner.
You are right on the money, actually my parents paid for the whole car, and I start paying them the whole amount back when I graduate. I have a guaranteed job in which i make $21/hour (cdn, which is like $5/hour US...jk) so it will take me 6 months or so to pay them the full amount. So yes, they helped me out, but in the end i will have paid for it all.
Currently I am not interested in doing any major odds except for maybe rims, but I would like to improve the sound of the muffler. Does changing the muffler affect the warranty? Which muffler gives a nice deep sound. Will it affect emission controls?
thanks

Great choice! I'm a relativly new RS owner myself, bought a MY99 RS coupe in March of this year. As for muffler try a Stromung dual or single tip... it won't affect emissions. I passed emissions with my Borla cat-back (thats a mid pipe + muffler). Anything after the cats wont change emissions. Take good care of her, that thing is practically brand new with that kind of mileage on a 2001.

BTW a couple cheap exterior mods you could do is debadge the S U B A R U letters on the trunk... I did this but still left the 2.5RS logo, looks better and it's easier to wax that way IMO. Also you could pop out those little orange vents below the front blinker and give em a couple coats of black paint, I dunno why they're there but the orange didn't match the color of the car. Lastly get the side skirts painted and for tint you would probably be happy with 35% front and 20% rear. Maybe this will help you get started.

If you dont want to drop $400-$500 for a just a muffler, I would stay away from stromung. I've seen their products deteriorate faster than mufflers a quarter of the price. They look and sound nice, and you can say you have a Stromung, but IMO, its not worth it. You can get a very similar sound with a cheap cat-back system installed by a local muffler shop- and you can pick the look of the muffler tip you want.

removing badging
Ive seen a lot with their subaru badges removed on the rear, whats the best way of removing the letters. Also, will it leave a ghost image? Will a wax job remove the ghost image? Any info on this subject would be much appreciated.
Thanks

my my01 rs
Ya, it was a good find, thats why I didn't want to wait until after graduation to buy it.
I paid $17,995 plus tax, or $20,604 with taxes. Remember, this is in Canadian dollars.
Basically, the story behind this car is it was a young asian guys car, but then he went back to Asia to work, and left his parents with the car, and they didnt drive standard. The car sat in a garage for almost 2 years. They sold the car to a dealership. Some guy bought the car before me, but his financing fell thru, so lucky me, the salesman knew I was looking for this exact model and color with no accidents, so he called me up in the morning, and by noon I had a deposit on it. Basically thats it, I sold my ford ranger and now drive the soobie. The girls love it, especially the ones at my university ( University of Victoria, BC) Thats about it. I'll tell ya later if I live happily ever after.

This is what I did to remove badging..
Heat gun / or blow dryer to melt adhesive on the letters
Bug & tar remover to get the left over adhesive off with rag (be patient it will come off)
Claybar, but be careful (make sure ALL adhesive is gone when you do this)
3 coats of wax
