Cool 1971 Datsun 510 project

I know its not a subaru project, but hey, I bought the car off of an I-club member back in the summer (Thanks Ian aka. Constellation), and the factory rear diff is the same r160 unit our beloved subies have, and I actually read somewhere that Fugi Heavy Industries actually built the 68-73 510s for Nissan. So technically its our Subies Cousin.

So, when I got the car it was complete and driveable....the interior wasn't bad, had some 280Z(?) front seats with SWEEEEEET brown and white cow print fuzzy seat covers, the radio shack special stereo, oil pressure and Temp guages, fuel pump switch, and a starter button, the rest was factory and in decent (mostly working) shape. It had quite a bit of body carnage, but nothing unfixable, and NO RUST anywhere. Not bad for apparently being an autocross car. (Yes the suspension is setup pretty sweet, and the engine has quite a bit of work done to it too, just needs a good cleaning.)

So basically, Here's some pics showing where I am as of today. Hey Ian, remember how the rearend was smashed in?

Thumbs up

This is the right rear door....it was totally dented in, like someone kicked it, or something heavy fell up against it at one time. Popped that baby right out...

Exclamation

The interior.......or lack thereof.

I pulled ALL Of the wiring out of the car, and am replacing it all with a sweet 18 circuit PAINLESS wiring Harness with a under dash (blade type) fuse block.

Then I find it.....the secret hideout for the rust bunnies :/ Luckily it looks like I caught it in time.....it is still in its pre-cancerous stages, but in desperate need of some TLC.

I was able to scrape most of the cancerous material away, but there is plenty more where that came from......but dont worry, I have a nice rust and paint removal sanding disk for my airtools, which I will be putting to good use in the near future.

Here's a couple pics of the engine bay.....needs some cleaning and I wanna take it apart and rebuild it....but I'm not really gonna do much more to *this* motor, it runs strong as it is, so I am gonna drive it for awhile before I consider a motorswap. It also has a 280ZX 5 speed trans. w00t!

well, thats it for now folks.....I'll post up more pics as the project progresses, Thanks for lookin'.

Tisk Tisk Ted. I thought you were going to finish the Subie before diving into the Datsun. We're never going to see the twin scroll in action

no no, dont worry my friend.....I have everything I need for that swap.....with the exception of a garage that doesnt get molested by construction workers every day.....so until my kitchen remodel is finished, I am not about to tear into the scoob....especially after the incident with my truck.....now I dont have a secondary vehicle if need be, so the scoob has to stay running.

And thanks Travis.... I am definitely not gonna do a half assed job on this baby....its gonna be uber clean when I'm done, I'm taking my time with it. I am actually also sitting on a 69 2 door that I am going to make into a monster.....but that is still atleast 1-1.5 years out, because I am going to be building my garage into a dream garage....so that will have to be completed before I start on the 69.

yep, little by little, as I have time, but its coming along....I did some research on rust preventative coatings today, for the floor pans after I get them all cleaned up. There is some pitting, but its not bad at all....the metal still has its integrity. So I found this coating that you paint on, and it turns any leftover rust into a non-porous, damn near indestructable finish, as well as seals and protects the metal while preventing any future rust. Its called POR-15, some pretty cool stuff, you may want to look into it, even if your car doesnt have any rust at all, it will permanently prevent rust forever. I'll be sure to post more pics as I get more stuff done.

Cameron....LOL, that does suck bro...thats one thing I really dont like about the east side.....all that snow everywhere....LOL. So when I pulled the back seat out, I found a picture of a girl under it, I think its a pic of the girl that Ian (constellation) bought the car from in SF. I thought that was pretty cool...plus I must have found 3-5 bucks in change all around the car.

2cam16 - Thanks man! Yea, this is gonna be a FUN car to build....especially since it is smog exempt! w00t! 1st step, is getting all the restoration outta the way, then the fun stuff begins. The good part about this particular car, is that the rust you can see in the floorpan is the worst rust on the whole car (and its not actually THAT bad, the metal still has its structural integrity.) So a little TLC and it'll be good as new without having to replace it.

Smile

Keep us up to date on the project and pics too ! Good luck Ted !
PS: I saw 2 yesterday at our autocross race (Oakland Coliseum). One of them had the BRE paint job and all even with John Morton's name on the window (I wonder if it's an original BRE?). Sweet looking thing but I didn't see it run as I left after my run at lunchtime.
