WTB: sticky 245/40/17 tires (bay area)
Looking for some tires for an HPDE, ideal size is 245/40/17 but anything close, let me know and it might work.
Can be either extreme streets (RE-01R, Z1 star spec, AD08, etc) or R-comps (R6, A6, v710, R888, whatever) -- not too picky, as long as they have plenty of life left for a couple weekends of lapping @ Seca.
Located in SF, willing to drive anywhere in bay area to take a look / pick them up. Cheaper the better but will pay up to $400 cash for a nearly-new used set. Thanks.

Thanks, but I'm looking for something that's summer-only or competition rated. I already have SPT's on my daily wheels which I may use in a pinch... looking to replace some v710's on my track only wheels.

Got 3 Kumho MX in 245/40/17. Nothing spectacular, but will let it go if you buy a few Chick Magnet 2.0 tshirts!

The specific rules and costs are determined by the organization hosting the event, but in general it's around $200/day and you are required to have a relatively recent year SA-certified helmet.
As far as what you need for your car, on a open HPDE style lapping day like this, you would be fine bringing a pretty much totally stock car and still have a blast. I would recommend putting in fresh brake fluid and engine oil right before the event, and making sure your pads have plenty of life left in them, then you're good to go. It's a total blast!
EDIT: THIS LIST is the most comprehensive schedule of open track day organizations here in NorCal, take a look and pick one! The NCRC event on Feb 25th at Laguna will be a great one, Infineon would be a good place to check out too.
And since a couple people have asked why I'm here on a Subaru forum w/ a Mazda... well, two reasons: I grew up in Portland and literally everyone up there has one so I've always loved them, and also, a lot of you guys use wheels and tires with the exact same specs as me, so it's a great additional place to score deals like this
Here's info on my turbo Mazda3 that these tires are going on... http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=131353
