It's a good suggestion, but I'd rather find another one and not have to alter the stock one. I way want to put it back on if/when I decide to sell the car.
I guess I should also ask: is it safe to drive w/out a heat shield? Only thing I can see that would be detrimental would be hot air released right next to the intercooler.

Tin snips, a dremel, or a grinder will get the job done.
When I had my WRX, I cut mine up and had no issues switching back to the stock downpipe. It looked mostly stock, and shouldn't be an issue when reselling the car. If necessary, modify yours now to save money, then buy one if/when you decide to sell the car in the future.

If you cut it with a die grinder, you really can't tell looking at it that it has been cut when it's installed on the car. Just make sure to file the sharp edges of metal so you don't cut yourself.
