State hopes to break car owners' habit of changing oil too often - latimes.com

i'm with this. when i tell people that i change my oil every 5k people look at me like i'm all reckless and sh*t.
people need to get over the oil changers / jiffy lube scam of changing oil out every 3k miles.

FAIL! meant to post this on BAIC forum.

It's cheap maintenance, especially when service by yourself. I'd maybe save 3 gallons of oil a year going to 5k intervals, not really my top priority. Shouldn't this be in another area?

I change mine around 4k. Blow bye and other contaminants break down the oil.
If you have tight pistons (no piston slap) then longer changes are probably ok, for those of us with slappy pistons...

I'd prefer to have a TBN done on my oil before I go on an extended interval. Plus I've heard Amsoil Euro formula isn't meant to be used on extended intervals.

That's different than the average driver though. I could give less of a **** about changing the oil on my 07 Civic every 3k miles. Its suggested to do it every 10 but I will probably just do it every 5k

that state sux on making automotive choices so EFF them. call me crazy but i change mine every 3k i take of my baby and beat the **** out of it. i DGAF on what anyone else says cuz ill have a better and longer lasting car than if someone changes it every 5k+. this longer lasting oil is bull**** you cant go 15,000 mi on 1 oil change. it depends on how u drive ur car n how long it sits also.

Once I started using good oil, my UOA suggested oil change around 4k-5k. I agree some folks change their oil too often. But then a lot of folks seem to be unaware that oil needs to be changed LOL.

Nevertheless, a couple gallons a year times 100k+ vehicles is a ****load of oil

This.

As long as my UOA says I got life left in my oil, then I'll run longer intervals no problem.
