I just picked up my Subie from the dealer. Prognosis wasn't good. Tranny broke due to blown bearing. Bright side, the AC works now! The dealership did not recommend driving it. I had it towed to my home. I strongly recommend the new owner tow it rather than drive.
This is, er, was my daily commute car from Palo Alto to Redwood City. I'm a middle aged guy busy with family and work that I don't have time, energy or funds to get the STi repaired. I see a Prius or minivan in my future :-)
If you have the motivation and interest, this is a great project car. You just need to find a good used tranny and swap it.
If your are interested or have questions let me know. I'll do my best to reply in the evenings. Make me an offer.
GOOD:
Strong engine
Adult owner
Tasteful and safe mods
Commuter car never raced or tracked
Religiously changed oil local shop
Major services performed at Carlsen or GST
Records and receipts
Subtle & nice WRX trunk
Catted Helix downpipe
Samco intercooler silicone hose
Whiteline steering bushings
Whiteline ALK kit
STI pinks
Group N-top hats
Rear struts were replaced at 65k for infamous "rear clunk".
STI floor mats
Just serviced A/C
10K easy miles on Potenza RE050A Pole Position. Lots of tread left.
Have all stock parts
Bad:
Needs new transmission
Dented rear bumper corner (thanks to my neighbor!)
Left front fender paint has stain.
Whiteline endlinks are noisy (I planned on replacing with Kartboys)
Second owner since early '05. First sold 2/04. Manufactured 11/03. Non -smoker.
PM me if interested. I'll reply in the evening.

In hind sight, my bad was ignoring the unusual whining noise and not taking it into the shop sooner. I hope this doesn't happen to others.
The 6-speed transmission is supposed to be bulletproof and the best that Subaru makes. The fluids were all good and last serviced by the dealer with factory oil.
For pricing, I'm taking offers.
Quick research I learned used trannys go for $2.5k-$3k. $550 for labor.
