Ive tried researching around other forums and google but i cant seem to find what im looking for. So, my 2011 wrx is the first turbo car ive owned but ive been into them for a while. I just dont understand when tuning is needed. Do we need tunes for any kind of aftermarket part we get? some things that ive read said no some said yes. others said 02-05 wrxs dont need tunes for intakes. im a little but confused, and sorry for the really noob q's. help pelase?

That's what I've heard too. I've got an 2003 rex w/ SPT intake & SPT cat-back exhaust no tune. She runs fine. Although, I would recommend a tune with headers, up-pipe, down-pipe, injectors, bigger turbo, bigger IC etc.

Tuning is always a good idea with our subarus.
The factory tune itself leaves so much on the shelf when it comes to power.
You may be better suited and get a tune b4 you get aftermarket parts which im guessing you are getting for more power, it may be money better spent and get you more power.
If you are going to add an intake and a cat back spend the extra couple hundered get the dp/up and the tune..
to answer your question more specifically do you need a tune.
Well its a 2011 so I would say get the SPT crap have the dealership throw it on and not violate your warranty, but whats the fun in that.
If you throw on some other aftermarket stuff you are playing with fire when it comes to warranty. You put it on engine blows up they say not covered cause of the aftermarket stuff.
You could probably get away with a cat back and an intake but why take the risk get it tuned.

from what i know, we dont even need a CAI on our cars.. but thats up to you. if you want my opinion. buy most of the parts like a turbo back and whatever else you want and just buy a accessport and either use the tune on there or save up more and get a custom map loaded on there for your car. and with how delicate our engines can be, i wouldnt run power mods without a tune. too many horror storys..

Its always a good idea to get tuned when you put after market parts on the car. Save your money for a up-pipe/down and get tuned after your install ..It will be a whole different car!

From my understanding is that cat back exhaust will not need a tune, but if you add any aftermarket intake then its a good idea to get a tune. Heard that using Cobb AP helps with those issues. Also with the AP you can change the map back to stock before you take it in to get serviced by Subaru. So you warranty should not be effected. Perhaps look into that and do bit more research.

as long as the intake maf is stock diameter it should be fine which i believe is 65mm. also if you plan on going anything other than stock boost, look into upgrading your intercooler. ive gone through 3 already. plastic endtanks plus metal tangs dont work well...
