My dad used to be friends with the owner of Sports Ltd. and I got all my bike stuff there when I was younger. You could check there, or I can ask my neighbor (my cycling buddy who drove me to the hospital when I got hurt) about the shop he used when he lived in Chico. I know where it was I just can't think of the damn name

Yea ask your neighbor. The thing is the bike is your standard $70 "mnt bike" from Walmart, but it was new when she lent it to my roomate to use to ride to work. Instead he abused the crap out of it. So its either buy a new one or get this one fixed. Id prefer to fix it if it can be done cheaply.
Heres the estimate from Pullins Cyclery:
True the rear $12
True the front $8
Adj rear hub $4
New Grip Shifters $39.95 w/ $15 of labor to install(he cracked the casing somhow)
Adjust brakes $16
So $39.95 in parts and $55 in labor = $97.85
Anyone have a free bike they dont want any more?

It sucks, but if it's a $70 mountain bike, that needs more than just some minor adjustments, it's going to be cheaper to just buy another one; they're basically disposable and effectively non-servicable.
All of the costs that shop is kicking you are very reasonable, you're not going to be able to get a better deal than that (most general tuneups run more than that) but putting $40 shifters on a $70 bike doesn't make sense. Why would you consider paying more to fix it than a brand new one costs?

Congratulations Lance with the new kid on the way!
Matt, it looks like we should all try and make this meeting. I can't understand why people think that a horse that weighs something like 1,000 lbs. and has metal shoes is better that a 30 pound bike with soft rubber tires.

Actually it sounds like Pullins was the place he went too. Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to find much better in terms of prices. Unless you really like the bike, replacing it with another Wal-Mart special will cost you about the same as repairing this one and will at least have all new components.

you're better off picking up a semi-decent "name brand" bike form a garage sale.
it'll last longer.
i picked up one for my wife to roll around on on the bike path by our house and the brake and shifter cables rusted in the jackets in less than a year and it NEVER saw water or rain.
the headset never tightened all the way so the handle bars would rotate when she'd ride it.
guess i should pay more than $50 if i expect it to last.
luckily she's not to into riding bikes, she'll prolly get my SS once i get it finished if we do any family rides in the future.

that's why i suggested the garage sale route.
you can pick up a semi-decent trail bike for >$100 if you look around.
something like a Trek, Specialized, GT, Giant, etc...
Trailmaster FTL!

yea Roadmasters sucks, i rather get a Huffy from Kmart. But im gonna check craigs and yard sales.
Check out the damage. I really think she just needs a new gear shifter, and rear brakes...
