Sorry to bump an old thread, but I thought some of you might like a little info about your route.
I used to work on the Mendocino NF on the Hotshot crew out of Stoneyford, so I recognize several of those roads.
If I am correct, these pictures below are leading into Elk Creek. In the first picture, do you see that drainage on the left? Well on the skiers left (looking downhill) is a fatality fire sight. 15 firefighters died here in 1953.
Here is a link to some info about the sight. Scroll down to where it says "Mendocino NF, Grindstone RD, CA" on the left side.

That should be more than enough info for anyone who cares. If you want more, google "Rattlesnake Fire" or IM me. Just thought some of you would like to know...it is one of those locations that is forever stuck in my mind.

Right you are, the new memorial is now there along the road right across from the site, (that one website hasn't been updated) I understand this event led to some changes in procedure for how these types of fires are approached, I know there was a similar event up in Montana right about that same time, give or take a couple years.
You guys that go out there and fight range fires must be serious adrenoline junkies, I can't imagine a more intense assignment, and you have my deepest respect for doing that.
