I took my ex to one of the meets and she just spent the whole time sitting in the car cause she was uncomfortable/intimidated/whatever by so many (predominantly male) gearheads

Well, you are a lucky man than...that's part of the reason why she an ex now...She did not really care to understand or even respect my car hobby after her initial patience ran out; yet expected me to say nothing about her 300 pairs of shoes and work on her car when it broke down. Probably has something to do with them not being to relate to it. And I guess some people are just less open minded and understanding than others...
