I swapped just the STi 6spd. I didn't use the R180 rear diff. Pretty much just used the tranny, shifter, and the new drive draft modified to fit the Legacy. I had to change the rear diff(still the R160) to 3.90, so it would match the front(Sti 6spd is a 1:1 center). It was a tight squeeze but it fits and works nice!

I've seen the engine done, though I think it was a WRX motor, not an STi motor. It doesn't matter though, since the outside dimensions were the same. It physically fits with no problem. I think he mounted it up to the Legacy 5spd, though, so as to not have to worry about the rear diff.
The hardest part was the wiring. I believe he had to use a WRX ECU with some custom wiring to interact with the other non-WRX parts in the car.
If you can pull it off, you'd have one of the coolest wagons in the world
Aaron@S-S is planning on putting a '02 WRX motor into his '97 Outback within the next few months. He might be able to give you some pointers.

Yeah, I'm sure its possible. Good luck.
The good thing with Subaru is that a lot of the parts physically match, so its just a matter of wiring to get everything working. The only thing I'd worry about is the driveshaft from the 6spd back to the r180. I don't know if the Impreza one will fit the longer length of the legacy.
